As many of you may have noticed...I have not held a tournament in some time. I can't pinpoint my slight step back from playing in/running tournaments to just one thing, however, I've recently started to miss all those things I love so much about the eternal formats. The number one thing I miss is the great times had with friends. It struck me the other day that aside from family an coworkers, all but two of the male guests on my side of my wedding list were magic playing friends(maybe that is a really scary thing ), and the recent team Hadley get-together at Dave Feinstein's recent 2 day event in RI made me miss the good old times. An idea came up at said Hadley gathering that really sounded like a great way to try to recreate what was once so: A vintage tournament during the day followed by a bar hop that evening. I'll let that sink in... Okay? Good. The Marriott where I used to hold events came to mind. Besides the nostalgic reasons, it is located within walking distance of about a half-dozen bars/pubs. If this sounds like a fun idea to you, I was hoping you could help me brainstorm. My question for all of you is twofold: What logistics need to be considered, both as a player and as a TO to provide the most enjoyable day/night event? If there would be something preventing you from attending such an event, what would it be? Of course, any feedback at all about the potential for such an event is appreciated, but try to keep the discussion to the two questions posed above. Thanks, in advance for your $0.02 (P.S.-A drunk James Hangley phone call prompted me to write this and get the ball rolling on starting to run events again.)

This sounds awesome. I always hated that I never got to play in one of your tournaments Ray. I think you just need to hold a good tourney, make and print out enough maps of the bars for everyone. Its a pretty awesome idea. Team ICBM hit up some clubs at GenCon last year and it was a great time.
Actually, In Wisconsin there were regular tournaments at bowling alleys, and drinking was allowed. Drinking at the tournaments kicks ass.

Oh man.
I would go, and I'd bring a whole slew of Long Islanders. I would fully expect to be banned from every bar/pub in five mile radius by the end of the night if Mr. Hangley was up to his usual shenanigans, but it would be a good time for all, I'm sure.

My phone call was a very drunken one just before team trivia at the Philly open was about to begin. I guess it was like a hey Ray had trivia lets call him up and see when his next event is going to be... with that said i would like to thank my drunken self for making this phone call. Also where ever you have a tournement i will be there. Hotel. cool. Gaming etc. There. Local bar. Amazing.

I'm in Ann Arbor Michigan a HUGE college town and EDH is very popular. We also have some great local breweries. I was thinking of putting the two together and hosting a fun event. I think it is a win, win.
Magic is a complicated and expensive game, time to stop acting like its for 12 year olds.

I had a BLAST at your past Waterbury events, Ray. It was something my best friend and I looked forward to. We had some amazing times on the travels there and the events themselves. I remember how many people there were, it was insane. I know a bunch of NePa people would certainly make the trip, at least a half dozen.

Agreed. Why not just cut to the chase and have the event at a place that serves/allows alcohol. 15 proxies + BYOB FTW!

Make it 0 proxies, but you can buy proxies by taking one drink per five proxies before round one. If you want to show up with a sharpie and 75 commons, ok, but you need 15 drinks lol.

I think drinking after your tournaments was not an uncommon venture, you just always had to work the tournament or the next day and never partook. I think all you'd really have to do is have a tournament and not have it go late, and the shenanigans always follow. That said, the people that went out also tended to have rooms and stay for a second day, and that second day limits your availability to go get hammered. I've been itching to play again lately so I'd probably show up.

Didn't the Marriott have a bar right outside the tournament hall? Also I'm pretty sure I remember Simon bringing in a 12 pack and half the bottles having broken all over one of the tables.

I support this. A few drinks before round one doesnt hurt.

this would have been epic but apparently the Marriott skyrocketed it's prices since I'd last been there. They want 700 for only part of the room we used to have for a single day.
I'm brainstorming ideas for some way to still hold a fun event with a 21+ theme but it looks like the marriott most likely won't be involved.

That's really surprising, seeing as Hotels are getting killed in the current economy. Gogo Moose Lodge!
