To begin, I would like to thank everyone who came out to Brothers Grim to play Vintage yesterday. We had 47 players fight it out for a Lotus. I was happy to see many of the new local players, and many of the familiar faces from out of state. It was a great day for Vintage in New York.
The Complete Metagame Breakdown:
Workshops:
8 Stax 3 MUD
Combo:
4 Drain Tendrils 3 TPS 1 ANT 1 Belcher 1 Elves 1 Dragon
Mana Drains:
7 Tezzeret 1 Mono-U Control
Oath:
6 Oath
Bazaars:
5 Dredge
Null Rods:
2 Goblins 1 Noble Fish 1 Dark Times 1 Euro Madness 1 Cats!
The most dominant pillar in this metagame was Workshops. This shouldn’t prove as much of a surprise, as Workshops are exceptionally popular in New York (much as Mana Drains are in New England). Still, the printing of Lodestone Golem has been a factor, and Shops comprised more than 23% of the field. Tezzeret clocked in at approximately 15% of the field, with Oath checking in at approximately 13% of the field. Dredge showed up at a shade over 10%, with various interpretations of combo and aggro comprising the remainder of the field.
While we are left considering the results, I would caution that the strength of Shops in this tournament was not just in numbers, as the two Shop decks in top 8 made it all the way to the finals.
Top 8 Pairings and Results:
Peter Ingram vs. Nick Coss – Ingram wins Corey Mann vs. Tim Taylor – Mann wins Raffaele Forino vs. Jim Davis – Forino wins Ryan Fisher vs. Austin Pollack – Fisher wins
Top 4 Pairings and Results:
Peter Ingram vs. Corey Mann – Ingram wins Raffaele Forino vs. Ryan Fisher – Forino wins
The Finals:
Peter Ingram vs. Raffaele Forino – Ingram wins
Heartfelt congratulations to Peter Ingram and Raffaele Forino, two of my close friends who were unfortunately destined to meet and leave only one victor. This was one of just a few finals matches that I dreamed of seeing, and watching it materialize was wonderful. Hearty congratulations to Pete, Raff, and all of the top 8 competitors.

9th Place Prize
The 9th place prize was 197 Ooze Gardens, 8 of which were foil and signed by the top 8. The winner was David Earley, who missed top 8 by 1.66%. Better luck next time, and in the mean time, congratulations on quite a bit in repack value…
Sportsmanship Prize
The Sportsmanship Prize of a Misty Rainforest was won by Pennsylvania’s own Keith Seals. I have only ever known Keith to be a standout individual, and this prize was well earned.
Random Wolf Shirt
The prize of a random wolf shirt was won by David Gans. Our wolf shirts were left in southern Jersey, but will be making their trip back to New York in the coming weeks, so send me your size and we’ll get you set. Congratulations Dave!

A great time to be had by all. I have only known the NYSE's, and events following, to be an amazing time. Special congratulations to Pete and Raf for a solid final, may the reign of Italian Stallion Stax never end.
Props: Nick D for teaching me about the Nazis and WWII Raf and Pete for being good friends and representing Strong Island well Nick C. for dealing like a champ and building the CATS! (even though he forgot the rare boxes) CATS! for getting there against JR (even though I tried to punt) TICHU all antics and events following the main event, which I would argue was the dinner at Fridays
Slops: CATS! for losing to everything else Austin and Dave Earley for that savage 3 bomb Tichu hand
Look forward to seeing everyone again real soon.

It's not very often that I get the chance to play Vintage; I had a blast and will be playing at events in the future. Thanks for running a great event Nick, as always it was insanely fun. I am in love with this deck, let me tell you. All day I felt like I had a huge edge in every game, and felt in complete control for the whole tournament. Unfortunately, the only time it stumbled was in the Top 8 against Peter Ingram. I really think this deck has what it takes to be a major contender, and although I would change a few slots (in both the MD and the SB) I think it's 99% there. A large portion of players from Northeast PA have been dominating the tournament scene in the area with this deck, it's no fluke. Jeremy Beaver, Dominic DiFebo, and most recently Nate Thompson have all put up impressive results in the last few months. <3 Drain Tendrils, NYSE Vintage events, and Club TGI Fridays

Congrats to Jim, who I played in round 3, for making top 8. Sorry for drawing the nuts both games. Congrats to Mr. Coss, who I played in round 4, for making top 8. One epic punt deserves another eh? Congrats to Raff, who I played in round 5, for getting to the finals and beating Fisher in your rematch. Congrats to Pete, who I played in round 6, for smashing face on the way to a win. I'm glad you and Tim both made top 8. I hope there's no hard feelings that I didn't scoop right away.
Congrats to teammates Ryan Fisher and Tim Taylor for making top 8 as well.
It was good to see everyone after my hiatus. I hope to see everyone again at the next Blue Bell.

Slops: Austin and Dave Earley for that savage 3 bomb Tichu hand That was pretty sick. Tichu definitely exceeded my expectations as a game and I'm looking forward to playing again in the future. Thanks to Nick for another well-run event. I guess I'll have to luck next time for the top 8, though I am glad I will be able to fill an entire junk rare binder with Ooze Gardens now.

Tichu is definitely one of my new favorite games and I couldn't have picked a better group of guys to learn it with. The fact is, it doesn't matter if I'm playing magic or not, these events are a blast. If you value fun and a damn solid group of guys you'll make the trip. Oh and I'm so glad we got there with that super loose grand tichu call.

They really did not play Black Lotus; the logic was that the deck needs multiple turns out of any mana source in the deck, and that explosiveness (aka lotus) won't win the game, because stax/mud will stall out if only given the opportunity to play 1 spell. Nick, Raf, anyone else, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, this was my understanding of why there's no lotus in the list.

That and the fact that lotus is only good on turn 1 because of all of the spheres/chalice 0

Are you sure that there were only 5 Dredge decks? I was one of the Dredge players and I played against 3 others, which would mean that the only Dredge player I could of possibly faced who I didn't was Jake lucky they didn't face me.

I've played this deck in more events than any of the other players. I have never once missed or needed lotus. The deck just doesn't need lotus

Further noted I may be able to count and am unable to back up or edit the claim of played in more events with this deck. Further more if you are playing a deck cats is the way to go as long as you don't punt like a certain cube of rube did...

I should post that deck in the pimp vintage card forum, featuring "Cattock Teeg"
What'ya think? Cat's.dec going to be dominating American Vintage soon?
Is there really any doubt that Cat's is the best deck in Vintage?AMEN. I mean it should probably have a better pilot than me, I'm pretty much a hall of fame punter. It's a really good thing I'm fun to be around

The real meddling mage would also like to know if they really did not play Black Lotus.
I remember when I selected this nickname a million years ago thinking that Pro Tour players didn't really play vintage and that it would most likely never come up....knew I should've gone with Sylvan Safekeeper...
-Nick
That and the fact that lotus is only good on turn 1 because of all of the spheres/chalice 0 I've played this deck in more events than any of the other players. I have never once missed or needed lotus. The deck just doesn't need lotus
If these decks hadn't had such an overwhelmingly strong showing at one of the larger recent events I could dismiss this as ridiculous and move on. It's just one of the assumptions in vintage...if your deck casts spells with mana, then it should have Black Lotus. I guess it's true, there is never a time where you NEED Black Lotus, I've ripped one off the top with three Workshops on the table or a chalice for zero out and cursed my luck, but so often it turns a hand from being ok to being amazing. Black Lotus often means the difference between a turn 1 Sphere of Resistance and a turn 1 Lodestone Golem AND Sphere of Resistance. Burying an opponent before they can set up their board position properly is a vital function of the deck and that early explosiveness can absolutely win games. In your decks where you have even less spheres and chalices to reduce the effectiveness of Lotus and Serum Powder which allows you to be pickier about having only the most potent opening hands to not include it makes even less sense to me. This whole thing is really blowing my mind. I'll be starting a thread to discuss this in a more appropriate forum.

Agreed, this was a super fun time, and special thanks to Max, Nick and Dave for helping me organize transportation. I look forward to posting a not completely embarrassing record at the next NYSE event.

Jake doesn’t open on Leyline – he plays City of Brass, and then Pithing Needle on Bazaar.
No, seriously.

@Prospero, Unknown to non-moderator folks, us Mods have the epic psychic ability to "know" things . GU3ST is indeed the great and mighty Jake Gans, I guess this means TMD is truly doomed now
