Yes, you read that correctly.

TMD Open is moving back to Waterbury- the place where it all began.

For those who remember the Waterbury event, you likely have fond memories.  For those who don’t recall it, there is something special about the location that just gives it a class act feel.

Be prepared for awesomeness beyond comprehension on September 11, 2010.

“Wait, how is this happening?” I hear you say.  Didn’t you say here(http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=39891.0) that the Marriott was looking for way to much money for an individual, not a dealer/store/vendor, to afford? Well, we have this adorable lug-head to thank for that: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?op=1&view=global&subj=517942211&pid=30378737&id=1334610022
The one and only Nick Coss has volunteered to cover the cost of the room on Saturday in exchange for vending rights.

What this means, however, is that currently this is a one day event, so I’m putting this out there now, if any vendors/stores want to buy in and either solo cover, or split the cost of Sunday’s rental fee, we can make this a two day thing.  I would just run with it and pay for the room and hope it works out, but since I run events as a hobby, not as a business, I can’t risk losing hundreds of dollars.

With room rental covered though, all I mostly have to worry about is prize support, so I plan on the following.

1.)   Collect money in entrance fees.
2.)   Pay judges/staff(I’m counting myself as a normal staff member…I’m not taking anything on top of that).
3.)   Give out 100% of what is left in prizes.

I only ask one thing of all of you.  Let’s make a huge effort to bring Vintage back to the state it was many years ago.  Let’s support the format by talking about it, promoting it, and sharing it with others.  There are a ton of Vintage events happening soon, so even if you can’t make mine, try to support those that you can.  Better yet, build a second deck and invite someone new to Vintage to give it a shot.  We can be the Vintage we were years ago, but it needs to be a community effort.  Let’s make this happen. (P.s.-Check out the “bounty” below on the heads of former vintage superstars…get any of them to come to this event and you both will receive $5 off your entry fee.)

Without further ado, the info:

TMD OPEN 14
Courtyard by Marriott
63 Grand St.
Waterbury, CT 06702

Time: Registration: 10:00 - 11:00 am
Tourney Starts PROMPTLY at 11:00 am(To avoid a prolonged tournament, this will be strictly enforced. Latecomers will be subject to a round 1 loss.)

Dopeness Factor: The value of 12^(a+c), where the graphs of y = -|x-a| + b and y = |x-c| + d intersect at points (2,5) and (8,3).

Day 1
Cost: $30 Entry Fee

Format - Type One with FIFTEEN proxies. Use http://forums.starcitygames.com/showthread.php?11903 as a guideline for what is acceptable for proxying.

Cut: Cut to top 8 if we have less than 96 players
or top 16 if we have more than 96 players

Prizes: I will be using a “based on participants” prize scale.

Here is the formula I used to come up with these numbers, so all is perfectly out in the open.
Entry Fee * Number of Participants – ($300 for judges/staff) – ($400 for t-shirts(door prizes) and Playmats) – ($50 for Magic Trivia Prizes) = Total purse for 1-8th place.
* Also subtract $100 toward Free Side Event if we have more than 80 players)
** These numbers don’t include money brought in for paid-for-byes because there is no way for me to predict this.  This money WILL be added to the prize support.
***Cash = 0.8 * Vendor Credit

Sample Prize Support based on 120 Participants
1st Prize – 1100 vendor credit or I will buy back the credit for $880 in cash + a paid for round 1 bye and Free Entry at TMD Open 15 + an official TMD Open 15 Custom Playmat

5th-8th Prize – 137 vendor credit or I will buy back the credit for $110 in cash

9th Prize – 16th prize – Official TMD Open 14 Custom Playmat

If we have 80 or more people, at the end of round 3 we will be taking sign ups for a FREE tournament for a Mana Drain. The tournament will require you to use the same deck used in the main event(to make life infinitely freakin' easier) and to ensure speedy signups and send off. This free tournament will be single elimination.

“Bounty Heads” – I would love to see some old-school vintage peeps at this throw back to the old Waterbury event.  If you bring with you any of the following legendary Vintage players, getting them out of Vintage retirement, at least for this event, hopefully for longer, you and them will both receive $5 off your entry fees.

BYES:
The top finishers(top is a relative word based on the size of the event) of ANY Type 1 tournament in the world will be rewarded with the ability to purchase a round one bye at the upcoming TMD Open 14. The following guidelines are to be considered:
1.) The tournament must have at least 25 people.
2.) If the tournament has between 25 and 49 people, the winner may purchase a bye for $10.
3.) If the tournament has between 50 and 74 people, the winner AND/OR the 2nd place finisher may purchase a bye for $10 each.
4.) If the tournament has 75+ people, the top 4 players may purchase a bye for $10

* If you are traveling from far away(of which tournaments I did not record winners) and feel you deserve the right to purchase a bye, simply let me know and I will adjust the list above to reflect it.
** With byes passing down from players already qualified for one, you may want to check this list carefully, and inform any friends that may not know they are qualified for a round 1 bye.

This list will be updated as time goes on.

Team rivalry, a.k.a. Braggin Rights Supreme September 2010:
Here is how its gonna go down.  Teams of three will agree prior to the event to play as a team and will register(seperate from a deck registration...it will be done on a different sheet of paper).  Each teams cost is $9...$3 per person.  Then, at the end of the tournament, the teams with the highest combined number of match points(top 16 matches-finals count as 3 points per match, just as in the swiss) will win.

If enough teams enter, there may be a second place prizes or more, but the number of teams entering, and thus the collected entry fees, will determine the prizes.  In the event of a tie for match points, the average opponent match win percentage of the three players on each team will be computed and compared.

After round 3 team designations will be inserted into players names, so teams may view each other team's players and match points on the pairings/standings.

I will be there.  I am already actively recruiting the NY guys to make the trip.  I want this to be as memorable as the old Waterbury's.  Hopefully I can bring you 25-30 guys from Long Island.

Also, when was the last Waterbury (the one at GamingEtc, no?) - was it March of 09?  If so, I can still buy a bye for the Dan Herd Memorial Tournament 1st place finish I had on June 6th of 09, correct?

So I won tmd 7, it seems fitting 5 years later to win 14.  Mystery guest will be in attendance.   -5$ for me.

Should I cross Hatcher off the list then?

I was once asked on MWS, what the highest I ever finished at a TMD Open was.  I replied, "I've never played in a Waterbury.  I was then called "A TOTAL NOOB!"

Is there still free entry fee for farthest traveled? because there's a chance i'm coming from Vegas for this

Unfortunately, the only prize for such a thing is my undying love and admiration.  Actually, the wife laid claim to that one, so maybe I'll give away a t-shirt.

You can probably out drink him.  But I don't think you'd survive a second encounter.
