So, I have some terrible news(don't worry...it's not terrible like Waterbury is canceled or anything).
The Marriott in their very tricky ways screwed me.
See...they told me on the phone the room would be $700. Nick, being the super awesome person he is, agreed to pay this even though at first he thought that was the cost for both days.
Then, they sent me a contract to sign that said:
FUNCTION INFORMATION AGENDA Date Start Time End Time Function Room Setup Agr Room Rental 9/11/2010 9:00 AM 11:00 PM General Session Clock Tower Ballroom Special $700.00 All meeting room, food and beverage, and related services are subject to applicable taxes (currently 6%) and service charge (currently 20%) in effect on the date(s) of the event.
Now...for those of you who, like me, either got married or worked in the food industry, you probably read this and said...sure...tax and TIP on banquet food.
That is not the case. Apparently they decided to tack on 20% to setup the room.
OH...I'M SORRY....I GUESS I SHOULD HAVE ASSUMED I WAS PAYING $700 FOR A ROOM FULL OF EMPTY AIR.
I had a few curt words with the banquet woman, but it was to no avail.
Dejected, I made the payment in full, anyway. The significance however, is that it SLIGHTLY affects the prize support I can offer. It will probably just slice a bit off the top 2 prizes and thus affect only two people (whom I promise will still not be upset with their rake). For example, with 120 players...instead of:
1st Prize 1100 vendor credit or I will buy back the credit for $880 in cash + a paid for round 1 bye and Free Entry at TMD Open 15 + an official TMD Open 15 Custom Playmat 2nd Prize 550 vendor credit or I will buy back the credit for $440 in cash
it will probably be:
1st Prize 925 vendor credit or I will buy back the credit for $740 in cash + a paid for round 1 bye and Free Entry at TMD Open 15 + an official TMD Open 15 Custom Playmat 2nd Prize 475 vendor credit or I will buy back the credit for $380 in cash
For all OTHER players, the PRIZES WILL REMAIN THE SAME!
I apologize very much for this because I don't want anyone to think I am trying to pull a fast one. I try to be very transparent with my costs vs. prizes to show I give away as much as possible. I understand if this change to the top 2 affects anyone's choice to come, I just wanted to be honest about it, rather than just change it and not say anything.

Stuff like that won't change anything for me, or anyone that I know. Thanks for the heads up though.
It looks like virtually everyone that I know from the N.Y./LI Vintage community is making this trip. I'd hazard a guess of 40 guys from Long Island alone.

IMO.... Going to TMD open is like being in the probowl of magic. Making the top cut is as impressive as winning the vintage world championship.Winning TMD open makes you to the vintage world, what Ric Flair is to wrestling,GOD!!!
With that said,If any one is gonna be upset that the still Fanfuckingtastic prize support got cut a little, tuff fucking cookies. I want to say thanks in advance to Ray and everyone involved who got this event back up and running. Everyone should get to this event! In fact, teach your mothers how to play so they can come to! At the last TMD open I did well enough to get a t shirt. This time im going to for the gold!
Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

People should go to this Regardless of prize, basically because it's fucking WATERBURY. This tournament has been the Pinicle of Vintage for as long as I can remember (playin vintage since '04)
I look at it this way:
Waterbury: The Superbowl of Vintage. Gencon: The Pro Bowl. Some pro's simply don't go.
Unfortunately, I can't make this as I don't have vacation @ my job and am not yet completely financially stable. I WILL*** make a Waterbury eventually.

With how big this event is going to be,The Separatist Council has a nice little surprise for TMD Open 14. We are currently thawing out a Sith lord who has been in a vintage carbonite hiatus. This may be his swan song, or it may be a new chapter in the Councils book of domination.

I'm comming fools - of course most of you probably assume there's a good chance that i'll show up to anything in the Eastern half of the US, so I'm sure no one's surprised. I'm bringing Ashok and everyone else on the Retired Vintage Legends list, so I'll just save my entry fee I'm also traveling with a car full of ringers from my new home in DC. Prepare for a beat down!

150.
I think I'm being conservative. If Hadley had 70, and nearly all of the NY, NJ and PA guys didn't show, that alone should push you well over 130. Throw in some guys from Cleveland, DC, people who don't post on TMD and a Dutchman and I think you're going to crack 150.

I honestly think this sounds low, if Hadley got 70. The majority of PA's Vintage community is coming out to this, including at least a few casual Vintage players from the Philly area that have contacted me. I will be disappointed if this doesn't pass 120 to be the largest Vintage tournament in the US this year and would not be surprised to see it hit 140+. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but the timing feels good for this.

Guess I am going to be that guy....
Costs went up by $140 (20% of 700). and prizes based on 120 People went down $200 (250$ store credit x .8 conversion rate). I.e. the numbers don't quite add up, though personally I appreciate all the honesty regarding the breakdown of fees and prizes.
I assume your helping pay for the room or w/e. Certainly won't dissuade me from coming (this will be by far the farthest I have traveled for vintage).

The last event ray did that I went to, he posted the cost and prize breakdown on the wall for everyone to see. It is very transparent, and he runs a hell of a show.

I do try to be transparent about my costs/prizes for two reasons: 1.) it is only fair to players 2.) when something like the above mentioned occurs, people tend to be understanding. I welcome your post...as to the reason, i also assumed the 6% tax was either already included in the $700 or only on food and beverages. It was 26% more than I thought(I rounded to $200)
