Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [OGW] Wastes: Barry's Land is REAL?

Don't know if it's real yet. It's on all the major spoiler sites. Nothing noticeably wrong with the card, correct set number, symbol foiling, new art. It would be an extremely impressive fake if it is. So I think this confirms that colorless mana now functions different in magic. It can be used to pay for mana costs and abilities of colorless cards. I'm not sure if this makes any old cards playable, but certainly a boost to cards like Memnarch and to the overall playability of this set. It also gives more justification for the Devoid mechanic. I don't see anything in this card that indicates that colorless mana functions any differently than it already does. I also don't see how this gives [Sm]Memnarch a boost. I think I see what you're getting at, but nothing released so far indicates that {<>} can override the color-required costs on Devoid or colorless cards.

I think this set will be completely useless to Vintage unless all previous colorless lands are pseudo errated to produce waste mana. The former being much more likely.
I disagree. I'm reading the new mana symbols as "you must pay colorless mana," plus whatever. Normal colorless mana can be paid with any color; this would be a way for people to spend specifically colorless, which the current symbol does not allow. Pretty sure Shops would go coocoo for cocoapuffs if they could play Ancestrall off a Wasteland or Ancient Tomb.

1. Keith Grim / Rob Edwards / Shawn Griffiths / Tom Dixon -- All of these players can play and succeed with any archetype. They would be able to switch it up in interesting ways after each trimester. 2. Brian Kelly / Matt Murray -- They can play the weirdest decks and do very well. Both would be hilarious AND insightful commentators. 3. Raff Forino / Fenton / Potucek / Ballester / Lim -- These are all masters of their respective archetypes. Having one slot for an expert per VSL would, I think, be valuable. After all, we have seen some people play the same archetype multiple trimesters in a row. (Honorable mention to Justin Kohler, who is sidelined by MTGO not being able to handle Auriok Salvagers).

Some of my highlights:
1) MILE RUN -- 1 MILE! GO!!!!!!!!!!!
2) Nothing gets you pumped for Vintage like Michael Jackson and Pokemon.
3) Trolling A-1 for a year with a certain doll.
4) Winning a Mox Ruby with Elves!
5) Dual-Mulligan to 0 against Prospero at a random Blue Bell event in the scrub bracket. I still lost that game.
6) Having my Yawgmoth's Will countered by an opponent Twincasting it and casting a Force out of his yard.
7) Pyroblasting a Daze. (This is super embarrassing, but it makes a great story)
8) State College --> Pen Argyl; Pen Argyl --> Long Island ---> Rochester; Rochester --> State College. What a weekend!

I wish I could be there, but I'll probably be hanging around day two of NYCC instead. There are at least two different great pizza shops within five minutes of the venue, as well as Burger King and McDonalds right down the road. Store sells canned sodas and bottles of water for $0.50, and the most delicious oatmeal cookies in the world for $0.25.

I could not be more happy to see two close friends in the finals! Congratulations to Keith, Rob, and the rest of the top 8 -- you earned it! Thanks to Nick Detwiler and Nick Coss for throwing a spectacular event, as usual. I was sad that Austin Pollack wasn't helming the kitchen this year, but the pizza runs were clutch -- and the cookies were DELICIOUS. Best dollars I spent all day.
Thanks to all my opponents for smashing my face in. I want to give special props to the Merfolk player I battled in round 6 (I think?). He had all the answers for me game 1, and I might have come off a little salty.
Great time, great people, and great format! I can't wait for next year!
P.S. I had to carry the trophy. So heavy. Lol.

Not to derail the smack-talk here, but would anybody be able to pick me up from the Hicksville / Port Jefferson LIRR stop at 9:55 AM on the day of the event? It's about ten minutes driving from the venue (3.5-ish miles). Here's the physical address:
Newbridge Road (Route 106) and West Barclay Street. One mile South of Exit 41 South off Long Island Expressway, or Exit 35 South off the Northern State Parkway.
Alternatively, is anybody driving out from Manhattan Saturday morning?

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Your Favorite Magic Card & Why (list no more than 3)

These are all fun to read. Here are mine:
1) Priest of Titania -- after I was taught to play Magic, my teacher would whoop me sideways with this gal, Intruder Alarm, and a bunch of other elves. The unfair mana advantage it generates was amazing to me at the time, and I have been hooked on combo ever since. Plus, the art is amazing -- especially blown up to its original size.
2) Legacy Weapon -- This card, especially the Xth edition art, encapsulates everything I love about the flavor of the game.
3) Ancestral Recall -- This was my first piece of power (preceding the Lotus by about three days), and is the one I have that is in by far the best condition. My favorite thing in all of Magic is to have more options, and there aren't many cards that are better at generating options than Ancestral Recall. It's also in my top three because it's always the card I'm happiest to cast in tournaments, and it also happens to the card that I play that tilts me most if it's stolen. (By Notion Thief or Misdirection.)
EDIT: That's the last time I try to type a lengthy post on my iPad. :-\

I've had a few requests for the list that I played at the event:
1 Black Lotus 4 Chalice of the Void 1 Mana Crypt 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Pearl 1 Sol Ring 4 Phyrexian Revoker 3 Sphere of Resistance 3 Thorn of Amethyst 4 Tangle Wire 4 Lodestone Golem 3 Phyrexian Revoker 4 Kuldotha Forgemaster 1 Duplicant 1 Steel Hellkite 1 Wurmcoil Engine 1 Sundering Titan
1 Strip Mine 1 Tolarian Academy 4 Ancient Tomb 4 Mishra’s Factory 4 Mishra’s Workshop 4 Wasteland
SB:
3 Crucible of Worlds 2 Serrated Arrows 3 Silent Arbiter 3 Witchbane Orb 1 Wurmcoil Engine 3 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
It was a pretty standard Martello Shops list with the fourth Revoker in the main, Serrated Arrows in the board for the various X/1s that needed to bite the bullet, and Arbiter as an answer to a lot of the aggro strategies in the field.
Thanks for posting this, Nick. As Matt mentioned, the three Revokers should be Metamorphs, and there seems to be a missing card -- would it happen to be City of Traitors? I love the Silent Arbiter tech. Do you think the Tabernacles are extremely necessary?

Shawn, Keith.... let's be serious for a second; Keith won because he managed to dodge ME all day. (And because Chris was gracious enough to plow all the way through to the finals after dismissing me round 2 in a pretty strong fashion).
Congrats to the entire top 8, especially to Keith for winning, Chris for coming in second, and Brian for out-Library-ing me with Mikokoro in the swiss.
Props also to Rob Edwards for showing off his ability to wax poetic to princesses after the event (and teaching me how to do it, so I could, in turn, show him how it's done).
Thanks again, Shawn, for a great day!

I actually cast Pyroblast targeting a Daze, not REB.
In that case, I've seen three different people cast Red Elemental Blast or Pyroblast into a Daze unless you've done it twice with the two different red counters. EDIT: I remember the tournament and date the first time I saw this happen, but I'm having a hard time placing when you did this. Was this before or after the Tinker incident? I mean, it wasn't in a tournament. I'm not THAT bad at this game.

To echo what others have said, I've seen two different people Red Elemental Blast a Daze. I've played Time Vault plus Key and was so astounded to see both resolve because I was certain my opponent had a counter that I forgot to take all the turns. I've played Ring of Renewal in my sideboard just to try and get it on a playmat. Platinum Angel meets Emerald Charm and Dredge steals a win is another old school favorite. I actually cast Pyroblast targeting a Daze, not REB. I also have cast a lethal Yawgmoth's Will, only to have my opponent Twincast my Yawgmoth's Will and cast Force of Will out of his graveyard to counter mine. Not as epic, but an Oath player once cast Show and Tell to put Emrakul into play against me when I was on Elves. I put Skullclamp into play, dodging the misstep in his hand. I combo'd out the next turn, casting Emrakul twice from my hand (thanks, old legend rule!)

brianpk80 is going to have a field day with this card.
I like this card a LOT. Comes down off Sapphire / Jet / Lotus / Petal + Cavern on turn 1. Makes Mental Misstep much better -- not only does Misstep protect it, but it turns misstep into Ancestral, Voltaic Key, Thoughtseize, Cage, Repeal, ETC. Fetches Time Vault, Voltaic Key, and Grand Abolisher to protect it. Not a four-of, obviously, but it has the potential to be very, very strong.

Hi Brian! I liked the write up, but I have two things to contest about our match. First, I had Ancestral naturally when you baited me out with yours. That's a minor detail, however.
Second, I believe our bizarre Time Vault game state was G2, directly after the Notion Thief shenanigans. i believe that you just beat me the third game fair and square, but that it was nowhere near as memorable as game 1 and ame 2. This could be wrong, however.
