The second iteration of the Grudge Match is coming to New York on January 8th of 2011.
For starters, here’s the basic information:
When: Saturday, January 8th, 2011.
Registration begins at 11am.
Round one begins at 12pm prompt.
What: $30, 15 proxy non-sanctioned Vintage tournament. Deck registration sheets will be in use. 1st place prize of an Unlimited Black Lotus is guaranteed. All additional prizes are dependent upon the number of entrants.
The prize structure (at 50 entrants):
1st – Unlimited Black Lotus
2nd – Unlimited Timetwister
3rd/4th - Revised Underground Sea
5th-8th – Force of Will
The prize structure (at 60 entrants):
1st – Unlimited Black Lotus
2nd – Unlimited Timetwister
3rd/4th – 2 Jace the Mind Sculptor to each player
5th-8th – Italian Mana Drain
The prize structure (at 70 entrants):
1st – Unlimited Black Lotus
2nd – Unlimited Mox Jet/Unlimited Time Walk (to be confirmed)
3rd/4th – Library of Alexandria
5th-8th - Italian Mana Drain
There may be additional credit thrown on top of this prize structure, but it depends on what the cost of the 2nd place prize ends up as.
Obviously there isn’t the greatest of chances that we hit an exact number like 50, 60 or 70. The prizes will be scaled up accordingly regardless. Don’t worry, if we hit 55, 65 or 75 players, there will be more given out. There will be a Sportsmanship prize for this event, along with a mystery 9th place prize.
Side Events: There will be side events running throughout the day. Side events will be run as 12 man pods, single elimination, with $10 entry. Support for these events will depend upon what is available with the dealer on the day of the event, but think something in the $100 range going to first.
Brothers Grim will also be running non-sanctioned drafts throughout the day. So if you’re looking to play something newer (re: worse) than Vintage, it will be available to you.
Byes: I have generally given all players who have won a major event since the last N.Y.S.E Lotus tournament a bye at my next Lotus tournament. Historically I have been supported primarily by the Mid Atlantic corridor players, which meant that byes were available to N.Y.S.E. and Blue Bell winners. With the advent of Bloomsburg Vintage, with a Waterbury having happened so recently, and with the winner of the last Grudge Match all deserving byes, the list of players is slightly longer than in the past. I don’t have a full list of the Blue Bell winners in front of me, so if you won Blue Bell (or know who did) in September/October, please let me know.
The list, as it stands now:
1. Shawn Griffiths (N.Y.S.E. XI)
2. Sean Higgins (N.Y.S.E. XII)
3. Carl Rumbel (Bloomsburg Vintage 4)
4. Joe Brown (Grudge Match I Winner)
5. Steve Nowakowski (Bloomsburg Vintage 3)
6. Jeff Folinus (Blue Bell Game Day 8 Winner)
7. Dave Reitnauer (Blue Bell Game Day 9 Winner)
8. Ashok Chitturi (2nd place at Waterbury, passed from Joe Brown)
9. Sam Berse – (Blue Bell Game Day 10 Winner)
10. Allen Fulmer (Council Open 2)
11. Andrew Keeton (Council Open 3)
12. Ray Robillard (TravisCon 4)
As players win major events in the region, they will be added to the bye list. If you are considering making this trip, and you are from outside the general area, please let me know. If you have won a major event in your region, you will be afforded a bye as well.
Teams: As with the original Grudge Match, this event will be team oriented. I am putting up a set of Sphere of Resistances, to be signed by the New York players, and given to the winning team (should someone manage to beat us on our home turf.)
Teams of three will be voted upon by members of their respective regions. Votes for team members will be allowed by members of each individual region (and thus the votes will be public). The threads for team voting will be put up as we near the event.
I’m going to ask the other regions (New England and PA) to put up a set of cards, to be signed by your team, and given to the winning team as well.
Player of the Year Race: Results for Grudge Match II will count towards the N.Y.S.E. Player of the Year Race. As this is the first event of 2011, this will be the first event at which 2011 points are calculated.
Additionally, the winner of the 2010 N.Y.S.E. Player of the Year Race will receive his oh-so awesome trophy, along with free entry into this tournament.
The points structure is such:
1st – 12 points
2nd – 9 points
3rd/4th – 6 points
5th-8th – 3 points
Players receive points according to each match win or draw they record during the Swiss rounds of the event, with the aforementioned additional points going out to the top 8 competitors.

http://www.facebook.com/nick.detwiler?ref=name#/group.php?v=info&ref=mf&gid=226523866027There will be a day two for this event. I have to schedule this with Brothers Grim, but the prize support will, in all likelihood, be a cash payout with 90% of the entrance fees going towards support.
The format for day two is up for you guys to decide. If you’re looking for a Vintage day two, that’s cool, and if you’re looking for a Legacy day two, that’s cool too. I’m looking for feedback on this, so please let me know.
Additionally, I am going to be in contact with local area hotels to see if I can set up a group rate for players from outside the area who are considering making the trip. More information on this will go up in the coming week or two.
The biggest selling point, as all who have ever played in an N.Y.S.E. event know, is the after party. N.Y.S.E. after parties are like Christmas, your 21st birthday and winning the lottery rolled into one. But they’re better. After parties in the past have featured such memorable moments as steak knife juggling contests, the 30 horsemen drink-off, JETS chants, and more. They’re not to be missed…
So, I think that’s everything (though I’m sure I’m missing some details here and there). I’ll update with more information as it comes in, but I hope to see everybody make the trip down to Long Island for the event!
Artist AppearanceI have spoken with Jeff Menges and he has agreed to make an appearance at the Grudge Match II. There are a few things that should be outlined:
1. Jeff will do card alterations at $5 per card, and playmat sketches at $20 per. Jeff will bring samples to give you a rough idea of what your alteration could look like. Alterations are typically done while you're playing, as it takes time to do alters.
2. There will be prints, artist proofs and altered cards for sale.
3. If you're looking to have cards signed please have no more than 10 per each wait through the line, as there are others who will be looking to have stuff signed as well.
