Hey Dave just one more question:
I was wondering if I could bring my 5 suitcases full of trades and set up shop in your shop?

Please don't try to buy/sell with other players at my store.  Trading with other players is welcome in my store, but all buying and selling must be done through the actual store (me :p)

I enjoy running Vintage in my store and many people remember me for playing in and running Vintage Events.  It's an open secret that I held off on running Vintage in my store for so long because they were the only group of players who were constantly violating my 'no buying/selling to other players' policy.  It was so bad that at my last Vintage event, top 4 literally sold my prizes to another dealer in the room for the same price I offered.  This disappointed me greatly and set back a good 3-4 months of being able to run Vintage at my store.

Not coincidentally, New England experienced a dearth of quality vintage events this year.  I want to run more Vintage in the area.  I really do.  I enjoy running Vintage very much and many of my good friends play mainly that format.  I sincerely ask that if you plan on attending Eternal weekend that you please adhere to that one very reasonable and basic rule of my store. I have among the lowest prices in the country for singles and am able to maintain those low prices based on doing lots of buying/selling with the players who come to my events.

If you believe that you will not be able to avoid buying/selling with other players, please do not attend Eternal Weekend.

It may not look like it when I'm busy dealing with 50-60 players at once, but I know everything that goes down in and around my store.  If anyone is found buying/selling singles on the premises (this includes the parking lot), you will be asked to leave immediately and risk losing prize if you are still in the event.  I absolutely hate putting that clause there, but it needs to be done in order to protect my event and the prospect of holding more of them.

OK.  That makes alot of sense when you put it that way.  I will leave my 5 suitcases of binders at home and just bring a reasonable amount of trade.

Thank you for your understanding.

- Dave

Would highly recommend looking at the albums if you have never been to my store and are wondering about the atmosphere.  We have a good time.

Would also recommend looking at the albums if you have been to my store, since it's been so long since I held vintage and maybe you wanted to refresh your memory of what a great time you had :p

I am thrilled to end Die Hard Games 2010 with Eternal Weekend once again.

They are among my favorite events and I believe anyone who attends will have a great time.

Thanks again,

- Dave

I was eyeballing that date, but I'd rather play than run an event anyways.  Just to be clear, it's fine if the Top 4 decides to keep the prizes instead of selling them back to you, right?

No one is forced to sell back to the store.

...But what happened last time was unacceptable.  Top 4 literally didn't play, took prizes and sold to you for basically the same price I offered.

I didn't really want to go into that here, but you brought it up.

Eric you are a dealer.  I am a store.  If you're in my store, you need to be able to respect my one very simple and reasonable rule of not buying/selling to other players.  I looked the other way the past times this rule has been violated.

I will not look the other way anymore.  Anyone attempting to buy/sell at any point during the weekend will be asked to leave.  That includes players attempting to work out a split with someone other than the store.

If you find that to be unreasonable, just don't show up.

I want to run more of these in the future... but if I'm forced to compete with others for the right to buy back my own prizes it causes complications in doing that.

This is not something you want to press me on.  Just please respect the rule and we won't have any trouble.
Again, if it's going to be an issue for you or you don't agree with my stance on it, just don't show up.

That's really the last I'd like to discuss of it in this thread.  You can talk to me in PM if you want to further discuss it.

I understand what is meant by this, but other players may not.  I encourage you to explain this a little more, so everyone is on the same page about what kinds of prize splits are acceptable at this event, and which aren't.

Right off, I have absolutely no issue with not buying or selling cards in your store.  I apologize if the way things went down ruffled some feathers.  It appeared to us that there was no issue since I was in the Top 4, as we were all friends.  I was the one who suggested we get a value from you, out of respect for your option to have first crack at it.  Clearly, we should have just taken the cards and split it up over dinner, but that's spilled milk.  Moving forward, I'd like to make sure everything is crystal clear so there are no issues going forward.

The prize splitting issue is just a little ambiguous.  Different stores handle it differently, so I just want to get everything out in the open so there is no unneeded drama.  For instance, at the last Battlegrounds, the players just kept the Mox Pearl between all 4 players.  They'll likely trade it to SCG, or I might even take a look at it if I run into them.  They're just trying to get the best value out of their prize.  Is that acceptable?

The last time I went to one of your events, it was me and 3 friends in the final 4, and we had no interest in playing it out.  Was it the discussion of values, or keeping the prizes to split between us that was the problem?  Just to paint an accurate picture, I didn't even keep all the cards, as someone else got the workshop, and I got the Mox.  Vintage is a small community, and there are certainly times where we want to split between friends and not be forced into taking an offer we could do better than.

Hopefully we can get this all clearly stated, so we can all have a fun weekend of playing cards with no unnecessary shenanigans.

(whole post summed up - can the Top 4 just take the prizes and go?)

If you choose to not play out top 4 and do a 4 way split, the only way that's possible is by dealing with the store.  If top 4 chooses to play it out, I'm giving out prizes as normal.  That means you have to play it out.  What people do with the prizes they win after they win them is their business... but the store is the only outlet players are allowed to receive cash/credit for splits from.

It's all pretty straightforward.  If people in top 4 ending up wanting to split that's fine, but they have to go through the store to do it.

I really, really would like to stop talking about this now.  :p

At the time, we didn't realize we were doing something utterly wrong and upsetting you -- it's something I regret.  I apologized to you in person and am doing it here, again.
Sorry, Dave -- this type of thing definitely won't happen anymore.  Let's all be pals again and just play cards.  Water under the bridge, and whatnot?

Also, it's a shame I can't go to this one -- I'll be in bed-bound recovery mode.  I hope you're willing to host events next year.  To everybody that's able to make it, have a good time and be kind to your local Feinstein.

Similar things have happened to me in the past tournaments I ran, the 4x workshop one being a prime example.  Players/Part time suitcase dealers made a significant effort to undermine any effort by me to offer a prize split payout which would allow me to retain the cards and run future tournaments.  The end result involved the prizes being bought by someone at a very discounted price where I should have just asserted the right as the person that took the time and effort and money to organize the event to tell those people to fuck off, if someone is going to profit from running the tournament, it will be the person that is running the tournament.

This ends up being bad for the community because for the most part, the people buying up the power/prize cards are just making a short term investment to turnaround and sell them at a profit via ebay/buy lists from other magic sites.  It's one of the reasons I have never really endorsed prize splits where power is on the line because the temptation is always there for someone like ELD to make a quick buck off a  tournament they are in no way involved in running.

It isn't a big deal if you decide to buy/sell the prize cards at some point in the future.  If you won them, it is your right to do whatever you want with the cards.  But don't have disrespect for the tournament organizer and do it in HIS store.

This is the same reason star city kicks all the morons out of their tournaments that buy/sell at their events.  They put in all the effort to run the show, douchebags and suitcase dealers have no business taking profit out of their pockets.

The 4x Workshop tourney you ran:

Jeff [your dealer] offered $412 per person.  I offered $450.  I was in the top 4.  Everyone took my offer.  Had nothing to do with outside dealers.

I know but if you went with what you told me the day of, you fully intended to just turn Around and sell everything for profit.  By forcing people to either play out a tournament legitimately or take the prize payout offered, it leaves the tournament runner with options to offer more rather than lose the cards to an investor who has no interest in running a tournament.  It's not really a bad thing because running those tournaments lead to a structure where i will never have to pay out of my pocket again.

This thread got interesting really quickly, didn't it?  Very Happy

Went to SCG's legacy 5k on Sunday and received many inquiries about Eternal Weekend.  Which to be honest threw me off guard and made me very excited.

Actively working on making the tourneys the best they can possibly be.  Already switched out 4 badlands for 4 trops in the legacy prize pool.  Thanks to Alex Serena of Starcity Games for assisting with that particular prize upgrade.

The debate that's spawned in my thread about prize splits and non-store/TO's buying out prizes is interesting, but it's a discussion best suited somewhere else.

People know where I stand on it.  I'm a store.  Please don't buy/sell in my store unless it's with me.  Follow that rule and I think you'll have a great time.  My store is a really fun place to play (I am biased :p).

For the most part, vintage players are great and I enjoy hosting tournaments for them.  The ability to host more tournaments hinges on people just respecting that one really simple rule.

I would ask further discussion of the issue of buying/selling in stores stop in my thread from this point on.

*looks at mods*

As for tourney, I'm working on it every day.  I think the last tournaments of 2010 for DHG may be our best.  Wink

Thanks for continued support.

- Dave

The drama looks like it's died down, but just to be clear, let's keep prize split policy chats out of this thread.  Dave has been pretty clear with what his policy at this specific tournament is, and if further clarification is needed you can PM him.  If you want to talk about buying/selling/prize splits outside the context of this specific tournament, feel free to do so in Vintage Issues.  Thanks -Andy

Updated prize pictures.  Everything now pictured.  Listed conditions for top 4 prizes.  Everything is in good to great shape except for the library, which has significant play.  An Italian drain compliments this Library as second place prize and I now have a picture of it.  The drain in fantastic shape.  The mox is in good shape with some wear, but not a whole lot.

The from the vaults are unopened, but the corners sting like you wouldn't believe as I cut myself positioning them for photos ... I walk through hot coal to run these :p

Anywho the event is shaping up nicely and I picked up some things to setup for future vinatge events already.  We'll see how this one goes but if everything happens as planned I'll be ready to run another vintage event immediately after this one.   Wink

I'm still plotting for the weekend but it's a rare untouched one as far as events on the east coast.  Not a whole lot going on and even if you live outside of New England I think Eternal Weekend would be worth the trip for any vintage/legacy enthusiast who can make it.

Literally the entire weekend is planned around these and I believe they won't disappoint.  I believe this will be our biggest Eternal Weekend ever, and we've had some doozies Smile

Thanks again for the support see you Dec 18th-19th
