ok, most of that eventually. 20 People, lots of fun, very little time here... Standing after 5 rounds of swiss: Jim Kinchloe - Turbo Tezz thing Stephen Menendian - ? Gush? Pyromancer? Daniel Friedman - Jace.dec? Jeff Neilson - Young Americans, minus five cards, plus 5 cards David Calhert - ? James Saunders - Shop deck I piloted last month Ryan Reynolds - Stuff with Pyromancers Matt Salts - Esper control Ryan Devine - ? Sorry my notes aren't better. I think I left stack of lists at the store. Top 4 was... Me Daniel James, and by process of elimination David Danny beat James, and David beat me (by playing more broken cards than me, and getting bobs online all three games while I get zero online. Pics and stuff later. Progress reports are due! Top 4 got $69, 2nd got Jace 2.0, 1st got FTV:Jace unopened thing. Dunno who won yet. |

It was a great turnout! Sadly for me, I lost on the bubble in the last round, finishing 3-2 and didn't make top 8. It was a good 3-game match in which I stumbled at the last minute due to a little unfamiliarity with my deck.
I was playing Stephen's Pyromancer Gush list, with one tweak because I was expecting to face The Sea Of Shops (though I wound up not playing any the whole day):

 4 Gush
 4 Preordain
 3 Mental Misstep
 3 Flusterstorm
 4 Force of Will
 3 Young Pyromancer
 3 Regrowth
 1 Tendrils of Agony
 1 Merchant Scroll
 1 Ponder
 1 Brainstorm
 1 Ancestral Recall
 1 Time Walk
 1 Hurkyll's Recall
 1 Demonic Tutor
 1 Vampiric Tutor
 1 Mystical Tutor
 1 Fastbond
 1 Yawgmoth's Will
 2 Ancient Grudge
 2 Jace, The Mind Sculptor

 1 Mox Pearl
 1 Mox Emerald
 1 Mox Jet
 1 Mox Ruby
 1 Mox Sapphire
 1 Black Lotus
 2 Underground Sea
 2 Volcanic Island
 2 Tropical Island
 1 Island
 4 Scalding Tarn
 3 Misty Rainforest

 Sideboard

 2 Thoughtseize
 4 Leyline of the Void
 1 Yixlid Jailor
 1 Ancient Grudge
 1 Mountain
 3 Nature's Claim
 3 Ingot Chewer

I didn't play dredge either, so the 2nd jailer was not missed in the sideboard.

My notes on the day are mainly that the two matches I lost, I lost to Dark Confidants that I couldn't do anything about. I'd really like to have some Lightning Bolts in the main I think. Or like a Fire/Ice or something. Or maybe Spell Snare, since the counters in here are pretty weak at trying to stop bob.

I don't see the tweak, as that's the exact list in my Grow article.   Jeff, are you planning on posting the decklists?  Or can I assume that no one will know my new deck? |

As Ryan said, he made one tweak from your list and he then described it. He switched 1 jailer sideboard for 1 more ancient grudge.  Yes the main deck is the same. |

The tweak was taking one jailer out for one grudge in the SB, as Mike pointed out. In retrospect I might have liked taking out the hurkyll's for another grudge, I wasn't excited about hurkyll's all day. But I didn't want to change the maindeck without having played the deck at least a little first, since I was sure you had good reasons to put it exactly the way it was. Now that I've given it a spin, I'll probably change one or two cards if I run it again. |

Hurkyls won me a game against Shops that nothing else would have.  I didn't see the Jailer change, that's why I asked.

Yeah, it does all come down to matchups. I just didn't appreciate hurkyll's because I didn't play shops all day. |

WOTC style, in no particular order: My bastardization of Rich Shay's deck My deck, piloted by local James Saunders Jim's deck Local Matt Salt's deck (on of the locals who figured out how to trade to get Vintage/legacy staples and now has his own Vintage Proxy deck possibilities (as long as it's blue based) and now has 2-3 pieces of power. Ryan Reynold's deck (former Eudemonia Judge). I think this is my favorite list. Dave's deck. SB Darkblast is a pretty low blow. Smenenn's list Danny's list. If Tobi wants them typed, I'll type them, but I'm busy!  Tourney pics later. |

standings after 5 rounds of swiss Dave and I both played Bob. He just happen to draw all his (or counter mine, I forget) He countered all my stuff, I blew up all his stuff. Trinket Mage to the rescue! Ummm... keep? Does this deck not run Top? Maybe I should have researched that! If Jace and Skullclamp got into a fight, who would win? Dredgeboy had a miserable fight against the cage. This might be the ol' dredge darkblast into BSC via Sensei's Top/draw ability, who shuffles what in and where? Yep, Darkblast James piloting whatever 5c shop deck I have built.  He didn't understant why Trading Post was in the deck, until he ddrew it whenever and wrecked face from there (or got forced asap) During this match against BC, I cast my second ever Yawgmoth's Will in a tourney. Smurf Pron All I remember was there was a shitload of magic played this game. BC checking his e-peen as local EDH guy pilots my deck. K, fastbond, check. Now what? Playing vs Dredge with actual bazaars and asian cards is kinda cool. More smurf action You can guess what Jim's proxies are...because they suck!  GGS sir. |

Bob-Gush-Mancer. That's interesting, for certain. I presume there will be something coming from you on Eternal Central in the near future, Steve. I'm interested in reading it, if that is the case. |

It's just Grow with Bobs.  I'm not planning an article/tournament report on it, even though I had plenty of tournament material.   But I appreciate the interest in such an article.  The Grow primer I wrote recently has 95% of the key precepts.    |

I understand that it's your previous Grow deck with Bobs over Regrowth and Jace, and in fact I bought the primer the day it came out (I just enjoy reading about Vintage, in general), so it's not something like that I was expecting. Just something more along the lines as to why you made that specific change and how exactly it worked out for you on the day is all. Obviously, you did quite well with this configuration, and congratulations on that. I love seeing Gush decks doing well. |

 50% Pyromancer top 8.  Wow.
I'm more surprised about LotusHead Fire Covenant. I thought the life was paid as a part of the costing cost, but if it's not... Seems a beast against those confidant/pyromancer/bug decks. |

It is, though. the oracle text on magic cards.info: As an additional cost to cast Fire Covenant, pay X life. Fire Covenant deals X damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures. |

Seems a beast against those confidant/pyromancer/bug decks.I messed around with Fire Covenant, but have found that Izzet Staticaster is a much safer option. Staticaster ignores Spell Pierce and Flusterstorm and can hang around for later to block/prevent them from casting another X/1 until they spend resources to remove her. |

 Semi-finals:David beat Jeff
 Danny beat James

 Finals: Split I believe.

Impossible.  Danny is a founding member of Team No Split.  That would go against everything he stands for. |

 50% Pyromancer top 8.  Wow.
I'm more surprised about LotusHead Fire Covenant. I thought the life was paid as a part of the costing cost, but if it's not... Seems a beast against those confidant/pyromancer/bug decks.Fire Covenant was in the headlines last month or so, but I've been so busy that I've done zero testing.  Also, I just happened to have a Fire Covenant on top of my desk. Stratocaster and (secret Frankie Mach tech) is much better probably. |

LotusHead, congrats on the top eight. How did Fire Covenant work out? Did you actually wipe out a board with it at any point?
Steve, interesting list. Did you find yourself losing to Bob flips all that often?

I had no Mystical Tutor in my deck, so Fire Covenent never came up. Grapeshot did once (and has similar desired effect). Mini Report: Round 1 vs Jim, I think. G1: I get all my goodies online, skullc;amp Elemental Tokens, and so forth G2: Tinker for BSC G3: Black Lotus/Mana Crypt into Tezzeret 1.0, tutor for Voltaic Key (Time Vault in hand) Round 2 Bye Round 3 Vs Aahz G1 I go broken (I think) G2 He dies to Bob flips There might have been a g3, who knows Round 4 vs BC (Shops) G1 I keep awesome hand vs ShopMaster BC. G2 He totally controls the game with artifacs and wastelands G3 We play a game of Magic. I topdeck a Jace 2.0 into brainstorm for awesomeness and set up a Yawgwill turn after keeping his damn Trike in check finally. (threw lots of good Human Wizards under the bus to get to that point). Blaine lets me play out my Yawgwill turn, because I'm so inexperienced with it, and there is a very real chance that I mess it up and pass the turn or something. Round 5 ID with Ryan Reynolds (even though I contemplate the Play Draw Rule for top 8. I am 3rd in swiss after round 4, so I am likely to be on the play if I ID. Top 8 vs Matt Salts G1 He Thoughtseizes, Fetches, and Mental Missteps into single digit life total, my dorks swing away as he draws little gas. G2 I blow up every fucking artifact he plays (this might be from another game vs another player), but Salts don't do social media or TMD thing, so my word is all that matters. G3, ok, g2 was probably g3, g2 was probably Tinker for Colossus Qfinals vs Matt Salts G1 I got busted G2 he Tinkers for BSC G3 He draws no gas. Top 4: David playing Grixis Controll( I think) Game 1 I go broken Game 2 He out Bob's me Game 3 He outbob's me again with more broken cards. I did make play of destroying his mox as he went to attack step with obvious Tinker in Hand. This bought me turns, but not the ultimate win. I think he Darkblasted my only bob this match, and drew bobs all over the place. Or he outplayed me. $69 dude! |

Blaine, I was forced into a split, as my ride and Dave Carhart (the other half of ICBM - West) were threatening to leave me there. I did get Dave to play the finals out at my house last weekend. I won 2-0. We filmed it, but didn't realize there was so much glare on my board. The video is basically useless.
But here are the important points in summary.

 - split the finals prize-wise
 - I won the tournament with my awesome deck "Mono Red Burn"
 - I won my top 4 match with a Rack and Ruin blowout hitting a Chalice at 1 and a Lodestone Golem
 - I hard-casted two Ingot Chewers against Workshops during the day
 - I boarded in Electrolize against Dredge which ended up winning a match by removing 3 Bridges
 - in "Mono Red Burn" fashion, I did win a game with Fire to the face

Dave Carhart is still around?  And he's on the West Coast now?  Unreal. Good job, btw. |

I'm the only other legal target, so I draw 6 cards, and he literally quits Magic.   Terrorists searching in vain for these powerful weapons have the saying "Bill Copes spitteth, and he taketh away."Team TMD | | |
