Reid duke should get an auto invite.
... and Olle Rade shouldn't? He won the first invitational, and the only one decided by Type 1. He beat a cheater and villain to win. He has innovated in every format he has tackled. I dont always barn on Magic players, but I am rooting for Olle. |

Reid did awesome on commentary.
WIsh brassman was in qualifier.
I like nick's workshop list much better then ochoas. 8 sphere seems like a must vs all the mentor/pyromancer decks and metalworker seems lackluster.
Shame we didnt get to see sams deck in action.

Indeed. The last match was crazy! I really hope that one or both players do a postmortem discussing their thoughts and decisions.
I want to call out David Ochoa for turning in a top-notch performance yesterday; I thought his games were nearly tactically flawless.

David Williams gave his game 3 away, first, when he cast vampiric eot early, and the second time the turn after he untapped with necro, I think.
He had 8 mana available for the turn. He could have cast dark petition into tendrils for 12ish and cabal therapy the jace, vryn's prodigy to protect his timetwister from flashback therapy should Olle draw a land. Like that, he could regain his necro-potency and he could cast twister to shuffle the tendrils back in, as well as olle being on 2 or so.
Afterwards, he drew into mana, and then more mana for 100 turns. That's bad luck. Had he played right, he would have needed much less luck.

Not caught up on the matches yet, but I was glad to see Kai point out to Randy in the pre-game, that a combo winter in a restricted-Chalice Vintage might not be good for the format. Of course, we're not there yet, but the exchange did make me worry that the restriction was made due to one particularly vocal complainer rather than tournament data...
Kai can be a bit of a curmudgeon in the VSL sometimes - but it was an important point to raise.
Edit: Commiserations to Nick - well done on flying the Vintage flag so well. But David played sensationally throughout the whole tournament and was a worthy winner. Look forward to the regular season now!

It didnt help Nick that Ochoa had Jittes and Nick had suboptimal cards post-board such as Sphere of Resistance and Porcelain Legionnaire. Ochoa took a gamble on his sideboard plans and it paid off. There were two games in particular where I thought Nick could potentionally have it, but Ochoa made the right blocks.

I hope Nick writes a report of his thought process. Leaning towards a lengthy report, from start to finish with the whole process. I will readily say that Jitte put me on tilt in game two. I didn't play Standard when that card was good, and I only had (very limited) experience with it in draft. I played horrifically with that Jitte in play. I am happy that if I had to lose, it was to someone like Ochoa. I like that he was a Vintage pilot first, I like that he has been on TMD forever, I like his low-key, laid back demeanor. He's a good guy. I had it brought to my attention that I punted my game three in match two against him. I believe it, and I own that, but man, was that a grueling six games. Playing elite level Magic after midnight is not easy. He out-played me over the course of the six games, and he earned it. Writing the report will involve watching all the videos over again, and that's tough. I'm not ready for that yet. This morning I felt the same way that I felt the morning after game seven of the 2004 ALCS. It was not easy. |

Of course it's not you who has to change, but me. People here motivate me to try harder, to respect the game. Winning is great, but play to win is even better.
Maybe I should write an article with vintage mistakes, that way I could learn something and share it with the community.

There's an incredible Vince Lombardi quote that Forino has etched into my mind: "Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence." I have a lot of work to do, and the VSL play-in tournament showed me where I needed to do my work. I am currently twelve pages into the report, and I now realize that this may need to be broken down into multiple articles, and not just one.
I should be done with it before the end of the night.
Edit: Twenty pages deep and I haven't done the intro yet, or added the personal touches that I like to with my articles. Should have it done tomorrow. Then it'll be time to shop it around and see if anyone wants it. May reach out to SCG.
