Matches
Round One Opponent: Sun Tzu, aka, ELD
Before Game 1 ELD and I discuss the famous Pickles for Chickens economic theory, which is more theory than those darn communist pigs use when making long term decisions. We also decide that older people have no utility, therefore they should become test subjects for our robot overlord, Kronos. Back to the games…
Game one ELD gets stuck on Underground while I play spells and develop a board. He break standstill twice, and Sindbad proves useful in getting me some Mishra’s Factories to my hand. He eventually lands a Mox Sapphire, but I am overwhelming him with mutavault, Sindbad draws, and eventually a certain faerie of legend. Eric manages to find a second land, but can’t get there. He looks at me and says “You may have won game 1, but all war is deception.” Believing that he just challenged me to a duel, I decide to board in Mindbreak traps, and a Telemin performance. I take out Spell Pierce and chain of vapor, since I don’t think ELD is playing a creature.
Game two opens quite differently. We fight over an Ancestral, finally amicably deciding that ELD can draw 3 if he asks nicely. He quickly develops enough storm and plays 6 goblins with a strong hand backing it up. I try to play spells, but that doesn’t work very well either. Should have played dredge. Just kidding, I like Magic. ELD beats me with Goblins and says “Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can?” Again, I believe he is trying to put me on tilt, so I take an Ambien and say my safety words.
Game three is tough. There are standstills, counterbalances, tops, Sindbads, and lots of Gushes. Eventually it comes down to one play: I go for the lethal Telemin Performance, but ELD has enough blue cards to defeat me. He does however play REB on Sindbad, commenting that “Sindbad was Dark Confidant before Dark Confidant exisited.” I respond with my usual banter of how Sindbad will now define the vintage metagame. We shake hands, and I wish my opponent an honorable death.

Round 2: Conan the Destroyer, aka Jeff
My opponent is dressed very sparsely, and is intimidating. I ask him how is doing today, and he tells me that he picks things up and puts them down. I ask him if that makes him happy, and he says “What makes me happy? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.” Great. With this type of discussion I put my opponent on Workshop, the deck with the least playskill. Workshop players are basically Memnite while sophisticated blue players are Arcum Dagson. He surprises me though- he is playing Oath. Maybe someone forgot to tell him that is so 2010.
Game one: My opponent leads with Lotus Petal, Tolarian, go. I think it is a trap, so decide to slow play my hand of amazingness. I land Sindbad, and he gets lots of (land) cards in my hand. I see a forbidden orchard after turn 3-4, but long after I have a nice board with Standstill, Top, Sindbad out there. He can’t get anywhere with my card draw, and we go to Game 2.
Game Two: Since he is Oath, I board in a crapload of Telemin Performance (x3) to see if I can actually resolve the spell in vintage. Jeff opens with Mox x3, Tolarian, Mana Vault, Tinker, Blightsteel. I chain of vapor it to his hand. I play counter balance, and he draws lands trying to get back to 12 mana. I hit sol Ring, and draw Telemin Performance. One my 4th turn, I cast Telemin Performance with no backup. Jeff Forces, and I go blind on counterbalance (one of the few times I remember to use it) and reveal….Telemin Performance. I mill him about ¾ of his deck, and get Emrakul, Sindbad’s son. Game over! My opponent nearly decapitates me, but decides to spare my life for today. He also lent me 3x Mutavault before the tourney, so he is #1 in my book. We shake hands and laugh about Telemin Performance.

Round 3: Connor MacLeod, aka Kyle
My opponent is definitely playing a combo deck, because he is talking about how he punted one of his last games. Combo players are always talking about the game they punted, except Brassman because he goes for the throat. Kyle loves 2 things: fancy cards and c-c-combos! He also loves EDH, and always lends me a deck, as does Adam and Jeff too. These guys are great for vintage and for magic in general. And….Back to the games. (I did finally build an EDH deck, and then Oli and Adam took out all the illegal cards.) Kyle is playing gush combo, but I do not see any duress in game one. Game one and two is a blur. One game he gets there with Myr Battlesphere, and one game I get my plan online. Neither are exciting. Game three is tight….we are the only ones left playing, and he just landed Myr Battlesphere. I have one play left…Telemin Performance. I use mystical for protection, and make sure I have enough mana. Kyle was only playing one creature, and goes to frown-town when I mill him. Always a good sport, Kyle and I shake hands and I move on to the next round.

Round 4: Napolean, aka Craig
My last opponent only speaks French, and is demanding I not eat his Ice Cream. (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsBrd3u1JZw) I do not attempt another bite! Craig and I ride to tourneys together, and generally I have not beaten him in a magic game since 2007. Even when I drafted (5) Riverfall Mimics and (4) Noggle bandits, I still lost. Craig keeps me up to date on drafting and sets, and generally lets me know what is happening in magic when I stop by Myriad Games, your Friendly Professional Game Store! (
www.myriadgames.com)
Game 1: Craig defeats me with a long chain of spells into storm. Details are fuzzy. I believe he has to use timetwister and regrowth to get there.
Game 2: Craig gets mana screwed, but had a great hand (2x Force, 2x Gush, Jace, Scroll, Land) I win after developing a crazy board.
Game 3: Craig has the win….but he fizzles after trying to storm out. I draw like a champ off a twister and wreck dreams of myriad money. (2x Mindbreak trap, 1x force, 1x Ancestral, land 1x telemin performance off the twister) and I take it down shortly thereafter. Craig offers his congrats, and talks about how he should have responded to Sindbad. ELD quickly joins the conversation to ask if Craig is actually wondering about how to deal with a Sindbad metagame. We all get a laugh, and we break up to trade some cards. ELD remind me that my lone loss with Sindbad was our first match. I stab ELD in the eye and take his gold. Take that Democracy!
3-1, 7-6 in games
Analysis: Sindbad has significantly changes the Myriad Meta. I expect more REB’s in the future, so I will make sure to play BEB’s and misdirection. Buy Sindbad now, while he is low. I am expecting him to jump to $75-100 by summer.
Props: Gold, my opponents for not decapitating me, and for having a good sense of humor. Top_Secret for settling our Crack the Earth lawsuit, Myriad Games for being so close to home and so good, and to Bill Copes, for allowing mere mortals like me to play magic. Thank goodness Bill decided to not annihilate us all. Sindbad, Telemin Performance, and the best format other than EDH.
Slops: The federal reserve, spelling, memory, silver, old people, and communists.
