Nice find Honestly, it looks like you got a good deal, and one hell of a cool deck. Whip that baby out (I mean the deck ) next time your playing with your buds, and you'll be the coolest guy in your shop Like I mean shit man, I would love to have a deck full of 6x9 cards. Now all they need to do is print dual lands, all of the power, Drains, forces and all the other Type 1 staples, and we'll all be playing 6x9 decks. I can't imagine how it is to shuffle them though

Chalice is amazing. It can single handedly win you games when playing against combo, and you drop it 1'st turn, as combo will slow considerably when it doesn't have most of it's artifact mana. Anything that relys on alot of artifact mana like Moxen, Lotus, Crypt gets hurt alot when chalice comes down on turn 1, then you follow with mongrel, jitte, rootwalla or something absurd like that And since I actually read Aether Vial right, I realize why Flying men isn't a great idea after all. See, since I'm proxying them, I looked at what it did on SCG, then started playing. With most cards that have counters, you usually remove the counter, but no, not with the Vial. OMG, that card is even more broken to me now!!!!!! I now leave it at 2 counters (rather than removing them every time I use the card) and bam. Most of my creatures come out for free. Gaea's Skyfolk seems like it would be a good idea, but I like the Spiketial as well. It allows you to catch your opponent off guard with it's ability. Only testing will tell, but both seem like good choices, depending on whether you want to go more of a control route, or beatdown route. Jacob: Your my hero, not only have you broken Jitte in Type 1, but Aether Vial too, now that I read it right And i'm also playing something other than combo, and I enjoy it at the same time PS: Why the hell was I able to get 3 Jittes in one day, but I can't get a single Aether Vial Stupid Vials Now I need vials and ninjas to finish the deck, but yet, I have all the best stuff. Jitte, FOW

Jacob: Congrats, you just made Jitte even more retardedly good + your T8 Not sure if were just looking for a vanilla creature to replace Spiketail, but what about Flying Men? 1/1 with Evasion for U seems pretty good to replace Spiketail with Plus, he's just so cool to play with. I'm also wondering about Chalice though. If you only want it out for 0, should there be 4 in the deck? I'm thinking about running 3, then run the Vise main with 3 Jittes main as well just to try it out. Too many times I've found myself drawing a Chalice when I didn't need it anymore, and just pitched it to Mongrel, though I guerss in the mid-late game it would be the same with Black Vise in a sense. Any thought on this?

Well, I don't have any at this time, I am getting some I have a signed Unlimited Timetwister coming in the mail as I write this, and next month I've got a deal going with a friend for an Unlimited Ancestral and another Timetwister. I'm also getting 2 NM Italian Drains from him. One day I hope to attain 4 sets of power. 1 of each Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, then 1 set for me to play with, preferrably all signed.

edit : any thoughts on choosing between Lightning Bolts and Lava Darts for the sideboard? Lava dart seems to be the chioce card nowadays. Even if it's countered you can flash it back, therefore giving you two copies of it per 1 that you run. Bolt can help take out bigger creatures like Juggys, but if it gets countered, you can't reuse it. Lava Dart is infinitely better in most cases due to flashback, making it harded to stop + It's card advantage

I would say Ebay would be the best place. But, I would also say just save your money to buy a car, and keep the cards Off-topic:This is going in my sig At one point I had to make the choice of fixing the brakes on my car, or buying a signed/altered Ancestral Recall. Guess which I spent my money on. And everyone else has brakes. I've been fine so far!

I don't think it's the fact that nobody likes you, it just happens that threads about how large your post count is are frowned upon.
The TMD moderators don't want spam threads on their forums, and that's what a thread about your post count essentially is, spam.
If your going to leave because of the rules, I don't know what to say but, goodbye.

I'm glad they waited to legalize Portal and it's friends, especially since as said in the article, some of these cards are hard to find. Imperial seal may just be one of those cards that I'll always proxy. The price on it is ridiculous now. Anybody know if they're planning to reprint any of the sets like Portal: 3 Kingdoms to make them more accessible to us?

There is no reason to name Cunning Wish on Meddling Mage anyways in there. Since this is a new concept, no one would have known this deck had no maindeck win condition. While I agree with you, the guy that made top 8 with it did lose a game to Lam Phan because of Meddling Mage naming Cunning Wish. I do believe that it would always be too risky to have your only win condition in your sideboard, due to the fact that if Cunning wisah got countered/RFG/Meddling Maged, you can't win. The deck was very innovative, and it looks as though it could possibly be more of a contender in the environment with some more thought put into the maindeck. A win condition main + another Mana Drain would be my first inclusions.

Since i'm almost exclusively a combo player, I'm going to say both Sideboarding with combo and mulliganing with combo. Also, what a good sideboard for [enter combo deck here] would be in certain metas.
I would love to see, as well as even participate in a primer on Doomsday, due to the fact that I have been playing the deck for a few months now, but just can't figure out the best sideboard for certain metas yet.
Strategy on innovation in deckbuilding would also be really good.

Name: Shane Age: 22 Live in: Barrie, Ontario, Canada Playing since: Umm. Around Ice Age, Fallen Empires *cough* Crap *cough* Interests: Magic, Guitar, Internet (for research and pron),my son and common-law wife of 5 years, and most of all, Magic again. Job: Machine operator Magic History: It all started at school. A friend of mine had about 100 cards and told me I could buy a pack of these 100 cards for $10 at the card store. I went up to the card store, bought one and could'nt wait to get home and try this cool looking game out. I opened the case up and saw these uber good cards like Craw Wurm, Fireball, Disintegrate and a bunch of other Revised commons/uncommons. I read the rule book, and tried this cool game out. Everytime I cast something I would put the land into my graveyard, figuring that once the mana was used the land was gone and I'm like "WTF, how the hell do I get more mana now?". I was officially baffled. About a year later I met another guy that got into the game and we figured the game out together and it all made sense, except we had no fucking clue, as we soon found out. We go to a small tournament and I pack the most UBER good deck I could. I vaguely remember Wall of Brambles and Urzatron land. Well, I start my 1'st game with a Urzatron land and cast wall of brambles. Then my opponent says "Dude, you can't do that, it's colourles mana and Wall takes Green" and I'm going "Huh? Why cant I cast the wall, this mana gives me ANY colour I want" and then he explained the whole colourless v.s coloured mana thing to me and I smacked myself. I proceed to get my ass kicked and low and behold, I win the consellation prize of an Ice Age starter pack, YAY!!!! After that I never had much of a chance to play with anybody seriously until I started hanging out at the local card show a few years later, about 3 years ago. I then played in the Planeshift Pre-Release and proceeded to get my ass kicked there as well, of course I thought I was good when I played my girlfriend cause I always beat her. This is when getting competitive started. Within the 1'st couple months I got to know everybody who was somebody at the shop and actually formed good relationships with them. Alot of them would trade me stuff and just say I owed them x amount of dollars worth of cards or cash, and I could pay them when I had the money/cards. This is when the collection started to get bigger. I wasted shitloads of money playing Draft, and constructed mostly still never doing all that great in constructed, but always doing somewhat good in draft. I always did good in the local pre-releases though, placing top 8 in the next 3 (Apocalypse, Odyssey, Torment). I came 2'nd in one of them, 3'rd in another and 7'th in the other. Can't remember which was which though. Then came my first tournament win. I read inquest and seen something about Worldgorger Dragon being Animated with Animate Dead and built the deck from there. I got up to the shop and showed the Judge (A good friend of mine) and he laughed and said there was another guy playing it as well. He gave me a few pointers about the deck contents and the matchups began. Round 1,2,3: I won them all Round 4: Draw with the guy playing the mirror Quarter Finals: Win Semis: Win Finals: Shit. It's the other Dragon player, surprise I lose game 1 due to a stupid play mistake. Never cast Entomb on your turn, putting a Dragon in your Graveyard, when playing against another Dragon deck. DAMN!!!!! Games 2-3 I destroy him I won another extended tournament with a Tradewinmd rider deck a few weeks later, owning Sligh in the finals with Chill. The only guy that could have put me out of that tournament was the guy that actually beat me 2-1 then gave it to me anyways cause he had to leave. BooYa!! Then I bought both a Mox Jet ($150) and a Mox Sapphire ($175). This is where my story gets sad. I played type 1 for awhile but decided at that point it was going to be too expensive to play and traded my Moxen away for about $650-$700 worth of extended cards. I then bought a Black Lotus ($250) and a few months later I decided Magic was not the way to go and sold all of my stuff including the Lotus. Now, fast forward to about 3-4 months ago. I realize I can make some money on Ebay and start selling my leftover cards that I had, as well as a complete foil set of Apocalypse. This is when (after I sold the last of my good stuff) I decided I wanted to start playing again. So now not only was I looking to buy cards to play with in my decks, I decided that since I make decent money now ($14.75/hr rather than the $10.50/hr I was making before) I wanted to play type 1. Great choice. Price drives me away before, so I go with the most expensive format when I start playing again. Anyways, I have probably spent close to $2000 in the last 3-4 months to get my collection rolling again. Now all I need is very few of the smaller cards (Tolarian Academy, Mana Crypt and still need 24 Duals) and I need Power, Drains and the biggest stuff. And now, here I am. I bet you think this is the end of my already long intro eh? Well, it's not. Current decks: Meandeck SX, MeanDeath, Doomsday, Control Slaver, Stax. I bet you think this is the end as well Eh???? Guess what, it is. P.S. sorry for the super long ass history, but once I start, I can't stop.

Forgot to add Passion of the Christ, The Day after Tomorrow and The Butterfly Effect to my list. The butterfly Effect was nothing short of brilliant (that kid in it was one tough son of a bitch), Day after Tomorrow had cool effects and I like natural disaster type movies (Including Twister and Tornado) and Passion of the Christ is the goriest (non-horror) movie I've ever seen

Next in line are Heat, Lord of the Rings (Trilogy),The Omen, Rosemary's baby,The Exorcist #2 and Shark Tale.
Scarface has to be the best movie ever, IMO.
Movies I need to see include, The Godfather, the second part to The Omen, and the rest of the Exorcist movies.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Choose 6 cards in Control Slaver

on: March 03, 2005, 10:05:43 pm

Don't go too overboard with making your sideboard completely wish targets that are one of's. Not saying that this was your plan, just pointing it out. I would say make half of your board wish targets that way you can still pack other non instant hate as well as have a solid board in game 2 against other decks, rather than having the whole/most of your sideboard devoted to 1'ofs.
For instance you could run a board that looks like this: (Taken from the Slaver build that was top 8 in Syracuse) Note *The list only ran one wish*
Non wish targets
3 Sphere of Resistance 2 Tormod's Crypt
Wish targets
1 Echoing Truth 1 Skeletal Scrying 1 Coffin Purge 3 Rack and Ruin 2 Lava Dart 2 Red Elemental Blast
A sideboard like this not only gives you flexibility when using wishes, but it also has enough copies of most of the wish targets to make an impact in game 2 if you board out the wishes. You can also for instance leave 1 Rack and Ruin ni the board, as well as boarding in two so that you have one to wish for as well as two maindeck.
You could run a board that looks something like this for example:
1-2 Coffin Purge 2-3 Rack and Ruin 2 Tormod's Crypt 1-2 Diabolic Edict 2-3 REB 3 other slots
Just some suggestions, I hope at least some of this helps.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Oshawa Stompy is it a Beast or a Weenie?
|
on: March 03, 2005, 09:47:25 pm
|
Isn't Oshawa the mono green deck that runs creatures like Vine Dryad and Rogue Elephant...? Or is that some other kind of stompy.. I believe that would be traditional stompy that your referring to. Oshawa Stompy is more of a Bazaar based deck. Traditional stompy is just moreless pure beats. On topic: You should definitly cut the deck down to 60 cards. I would either cut red in it's entirety (spell check) or use a very light splash for pure utility like Lavamancer and Artifact Mutation/Rack and Ruin. Maybe run a mana base that looks something like this 4x Taiga 4x Waste land 1x Strip Mine 4x Wooded Foothills 1x Black Lotus 1x Mox Emerald 1x Mox Ruby 4x ESG 4x Forest 1x Mountain 4x Wild Mongrel is a must. Pyrostatic Pillar is another card you could test against combo, if that has'nt already been said. Combo will be very hard to beat with this deck unless you have a sideboard almost exclusively to beat combo. For instance, neither Root maze nor Null Rod will hurt Doomsday. I know Doomsday isn't player very much, but I just thought I would point that out. Pillar is, IMO, the best card you would have against non-storm combo. Against storm combo you seem to have it pretty clear. Maze + Null Rod will hurt storm combo alot. Other than the size of the decklist and the amount of mana sources the original decklist has, it looks like a decent deck. Just test and tweak it until you get it to the point you want it to be.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [ Article] A Closer Look At Control Slaver
|
on: March 03, 2005, 07:05:02 pm
|
I would just like to say, great article Steve.
The whole "play it like a Yawgmoth's will deck" part has actually helped me to learn the deck better and have a better understanding as to why to use YawgWin and Black in general.
I still agree that the Intuition/Ak draw engine is good in the deck, esepecially with Yawgwin in the deck, so in a way you can play two diffrent types of games with Slaver.
You can go "Combo" with Yawgmoth's will and use your draw to feed it, or you can play strict control and not worry about the will at all.
Overall I think the article was a great read, and has helped me become better by understanding the deck even more. It has helped me to think "outside of the box" rather than keep my brain "inside the box" with Control-Slaver.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Discuss] What decks can come back now?
|

I think Tog and maybe Belcher will come back.
Belcher may still have a bit of a hard time with Sphere of Resistance, but nowhere near as hard of a time with no 3Sphere around now.
Fish could make a comeback, but I don't think it will be on the top yet.
With the lack of Null Rod being played in most decks as of late, some sort of Affinity deck may come around, maybe even Suicide Virus but only time will really tell.

I don't think it was the right time to restrict Trinisphere. Sure, once the lock is down your opponent means nothing (most of the time), sure it was shitty when you could'nt do anything, but the card was'nt dominating anything.
I agree that player interaction is good, but Trinisphere, IMO, should not have gotten the axe because it forces non-player interaction.
And to all those who are predicting combo will dominate, only time will tell. There are still alot of combo hosers out there besides 3Sphere.

Good job with the deck. Adding black was pure genius at work The only thing I want to know is, do you ever have mana consistency issues? I have had problems with mana consistency alot. I find It hard to find the colour I need at times. I just built the deck yesterday, card for card with your list so maybe i'm just unlucky, or I suck at shuffling and get mana clumps

I'm glad I got premium. The coverage of Syracuse was superb. Seeing the meta-game breakdown was absolutely awesome, and the Match reports were great too. I have no complaints about the coverage, except maybe the time it took to get something up, but that has already been adressed, and I understand it takes time to do this stuff, so I won't complain. Thanks for the great coverage, and lets hope I can find a ride from Canada so I can meet all you people at the next Syracuse .

Dammit, good players need to go to make sure none of the White Weenie brats on SCG forums make it to T8.
(I am not implying anything about the people who have said they are going, but merely stating my hope that many good players will go to crush the Dead Deckers) Dude, only one of us is going, and you need to get off the medication. Why don't you come beat the DeadDecker since you want it done so badly? Anyways, I would come if I did'nt live in Canada, and knew other people that were going from Canada. Snow does'nt scare me if i'm not driving Perhaps in the coming months I will find out whos from Canada on here, and may be able to hitch a ride with them as long as it's not too costly for hotels and stuff, and not too far of a drive. I think Syracuse is only about 6-7 hours away, so maybe I can get a ride to the next one. P.S. to all the guys from Totonto and surrounding area that are going to the next P9 tourney, Msg me. I can and will pitch in for gas, hotel rooms and I definitly shower. I don't mind spending some cash for the chance to win power and play/meet some of the people on here.
