Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Resolving lethal damage

If I have a Frogmite and an Arcbound Worker on the board, and my opponent casts Volcanic Fallout, do I have the option to stack the order that my creatures go to the graveyard? Does this allow the modular counter to then hit the stack and resolve before the Frogmite goes to the grave? Or do both creatures die at the same time fizzling the modular?

Honestly, you need Mystical Tutor for sure. In my opinion, you can't survive with Infernal as your only tutor. Usually if you haven't won by turn 4, it's because your missing one card, or a tutor. And the one bad thing about infernal is you either have all the cards you need and you use it to go get something to hopefully set up your win, or you just double up something to set up next turn. I know Nauseaum is good, but you have to go all in when using it as a tutor.
And I do think that you want at least one more gains maindeck. It will just really help your loop out. If your playing a counter heavy deck, and you expect to resolve your one gains, you better be ready to fight for it. At the point and time you cast that spell, you have most likely gone all in and need it to resolve so you can get more mana and find tendrils. Duress is great against control, and so is Pact, in the sideboard. I found that I would be stuck with Pact in my hand and all I wanted was to be hellbent. FOW has the same problem. Being able to Mystical EOT for duress is such a great play, you don't need Pact for every matchup.
I was wondering how you like the mox's. I've been using Lotus Petal in my build.

This is crap. How many posts does it require for TMD to keep the any forums up? Is the effect of the economy affecting this website or something? People had a place to go to for info and now it's gone. I don't have a problem checking other websites, I just was partial to this one. Maybe next time we could all have a warning or something that we weren't posting enough to keep any child boards open.
It's not like Legacy is a fast changing format or something. We do research on a particular deck, when a tournament comes around, we test our ideas out, and then we make posts here. Well, I guess that not everyone has patience for this. I'm sorry for that. I hope this doesn't make the format so foreign to newcomers that it slows down even more.

Dude, seriously, I know this. But come on. I'm pretty sure there were at least a few people that thought it was you when it happened. I really think it was the boneheads that got a game loss for being late. In my opinion, pissing on a toilet seat after a game loss for being late might seem like a cool thing to do, depending on my mood that day.
But seriously, I have a lot of respect for Carl and all he's done, and I would never do that either. I wonder if Carl had to take a mean Lorenzo(shit) and when he walked in the bathroom, there was a toilet seat full of piss. Man, I'd wanna beat some Magic dorks ass hard. I can't blame him for being mad but, come on, no more tourney's. That is bull. I just remember seeing a lot of my homies at Black Gold for these and I'd be hella pissed if that was all going to change. Carl's taking it to the extreme for sure, but what can you do. It's his shop. I bet he'll start up the tourney's again.

It's cool that you were able to pick up the t1 tournament scene Pierce. Hopefully Lou won't piss on the toilet seat this time and screw everything up again. Just kidding, I don't know if Lou did that or not, I just thought it could have possibly been him. I just don't think it's above him.
But seriously, good luck to the crew, I wish I was there.

You know, I was pretty sad to be moving away from Colorado, all my friends, and a really big Magic scene. Out here in OR, all the shops play mostly draft, which is cool and a lot of fun, but I'm used to playing a lot more standard than is available out here. Also, there is literally no Vintage scene. I mean it. I can't seem to find any outlet to play against another Vintage player. These people out here won't even fork out the money to play a Standard deck, let alone a Vintage one.
So, long story short, you guy's really have a good thing out there in CO. Carl, don't let the scene die. It sounds like there are people that are going to fill the void that you are creating, but damn, I know that I have really fond memories of playing cards there. Hearing this news is a big bummer. Even though I won't be playing there, it still is a bummer to me. Hopefully for everyone you can find a solution that allows some tourney action still.
I also wanted to say what's up to all my crew, you know who you are. Much love.

I don't like the force's. I really feel like duress/thoughtsieze are the way to go in this deck. The whole prison concept seems like it would be very good too, but I haven't done any testing with this whatsoever.
How have the force's been working out though? I'm wondering if your having problems having another blue card to pitch when you really need it.
No matter what, for a combo deck to be effective, you want the whole tutor package in it so you can get your missing pieces. I wouldn't cut duress's period. Simulacrum is way to slow if your not holding your opponent back. Trike is also way too slow in a build like this. He can be efficient in a deck running metalworker, but your not going to want to waste your time tapping out for something that costs six mana when it doesn't win you the game.
And about grindstone, I think it's a three of at min. because it's your win condition essentially.

I'm not too sure about this mana base at all either. If your going to run the foothills, I'd also have some badlands. This way you could run some tasty goodies like demonic tutor and vamp tutor just for starters.
I was wondering if you had already tried to run a full set of mox's? It seems like they would increase your odds of having turn 1/2 wins.
Also, regrowth is a real hottie. I'm thinking that it could, at min. be better than summoners pact, but I like it better than the pact of negation also. If they counter your crucial card, you get it back.
But then there's that other issue of, what is your opponent doing on their turn. Something like duress or thoughtsieze, in my opinion, are much better than any counters you could run for the simple fact that, your deck can function much better with black than with blue cards.

I'm having a little trouble finding a vintage community in Oregon. I just moved here from Colorado, and we had an amazing community out there. You could say that I'm going through withdrawels of sorts.
Does anyone know of a tournament scene out here at all? I have to assume that there are vintage players out here, it just might take a little searching.
If there isn't a scene here now, I would like to here from some people that would be willing to get one started with me. Just send me a message with any info that could help.
I really appreciate any help.

Hi madmanmike,
very worthy input. So the Bottled Cloister acts as an additional draw each turn, that's nice. Uba Mask gives me 3 cards per turn on hand when i get Bazaar online and also nerves control and combo players. This "when" in "when i get Bazaar online" is a point. Cloister can also work without other cards. But imo Uba is preferable because of its disruptive element and that's what MUD wants. But I went down to 3. Its not such a necessary element of the first turns and so 3 should be ok. Some combo decks use draw7s. Each uses Brainstorm. And it forces to play the card THIS turn. I think thats good to reduce the chance of a fatal storm count.
I also put in 2 more City of Traitors. Jester's Cap is a very nice tool but it costs a bit much. Ensnaring Bridge also is a nice tool against very aggressive decks. Since Its good even against combo (using ETW) or Ichorid i think its preferable to Powder Keg.
The SB Trisks are vs enemy welders etc they nerve a lot.
My other toughts you can read in my new list.
4 Mishra's Workshop 4 Ancient Tomb 2 City of Traitors 1 Tolarian Academy 4 Wasteland 1 Strip Mine 4 Bazaar of Baghdad
4 Metalworker 2 Karn, Silver Golem 2 Triskelion
4 Sphere of Resistance 1 Trinisphere 3 Crucible of Worlds 4 Smokestack 4 Tangle Wire 4 Chalice of the Void
3 Uba Mask
1 Mox Pearl 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Pearl 1 Mox Jet 1 Mana Vault 1 Mana Crypt 1 Sol Ring 1 Black Lotus
SB:
3 Razormane Masticore 2 Triskelion 4 Defense Grid 3 Ensnaring Bridge 3 Tormod's Crypt
I agree with your ensnaring bridges for ichorid. I've never used them but I think I'm gonna start. I've been trying out orb of dreams, with minimal results. I also think that metalworker is an auto 4 of. He just makes you go busted. I just love the look on someones face when you go first turn, workshop, metalworker. It's great.

What's up, my name is Josh. I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I've been playing Magic competitively since I moved here in 2003. I recently opened up a manadrain account last week and wanted to introduce myself. I mostly play vintage, but I try and play FNM when I can.
