1  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Re: Myr Retriever combo on: May 07, 2006, 03:06:53 am
Null rod and chalices in casual I hate to play casual with some of you. Though with a deck so creature heavy culll of the weak might be a nifty idea to add in there. Though that kinda of makes this feel more and more like a kobold deck.
2  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Ask Wizards, aka T1 in a Nutshell on: December 31, 2004, 03:32:56 am
well wizards stance this issue to mean doesn't seem to left field. It makes very little sense to spend a lot of time hyping up vintage in general. The bottom line is even if old cards are worth a ton of money wizards isn't getting that money, with other formats of playing magic people have to constantly get new cards and keep up with things they get some money. If vintage made them more money then things would be different but, I am sure there quite a few vintage people who haven't bought a pack of magic in while especially compared to type 2 players. Vintage players are pretty much leftovers in wizard's eyes.
3  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Card names and you on: November 30, 2004, 03:51:41 am
It definately happens a lot especially if I am standing around a bunch of my friends that are magic players. Sometimes it'll be a head turner especially if I am hanging out with Carl and Liz and we all start laughing. Another aspect of it is if you see magic cards enough you can spell strange words that normal people would have a hard time dealing with, plus it always helps with scrabble "Zealot", "Morph".
4  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Favorite Card on: November 16, 2004, 01:30:16 am
Scronful Egotist hands down its the coolest card I've ever messed with. I made a causal deck that uses and abuses its powers. The coolest 1/1 in magic and converted highest mana costing 1/1 i think of all time.
5  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / T1 Theory: Type One Decks as Fruit in a seasonal metagame on: November 13, 2004, 05:48:16 am
[/quote]

Well, like I said in the article, T1 coming of age means that it will lose lots of the casual players who played it for years.  I'll shed no tears.[/quote]

How can you say something like that if the type one community shrinks it affects everyone. Losing passionate players because of a predictable metagame that goes in cycles as you mentioned earlier is bad news to everyone. The tournaments at type 1 events are made up of many players at different skill levels playing verious decks. This helps the dealers keep tournaments going if only the best players showed up they'd be drving four hours to play with 12 people that should shed you some tears. You need people in the type one players like you need water in your body to keep the format going. And if the metagame is turning people off for whatever reason you should be worried about tournament turnouts where people  wanna play their best decks even if they don't win. The loss of the casual player can hurt much more than you over simplified.
6  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / New White deck:White supremacy on: November 12, 2004, 12:27:02 am
I am ashamed of some of you absoultely trashing something you've never tested and cutting down possible progress in deck building is hurtful to everyone in type 1. Just cause its not a deck that someone from the community here thats a vintage adept or moderator makes doesn't mean you should trash it to try to show your knowledge. Callign this deck a crappy version of 4cc clearly shows you haven't played at tournaments since 1995 or else you would have to play a parfeit deck with a similar skeleton.

This deck has been tested and proved to be somewhat of a contender in todays metagame. here is some of the reasons why. Orm's Chant is a very powerful spell, it stops combo its at instant speed and cost 1 white. The some things goes for Abeyance its disruption is there what the deck lacks is a better draw engine than land tax and scroll rack. Disenchant is powerful, the reason this deck works is its powerful answer for things.

Dragon is worse off with this deck than any other, but, fish struggles as well with critters like white knights and exhalted angel. I agree that four wraths could be too many, but, this deck has potential it won matches at a power tournament that you can not dispute.  Its mana base is extremely solid as well, without nonbasic lands and added colors its gives it much more consistant results.

All I can say is that there are new decks out there that are better than every deck now but, you have to build and test until you discover it. If you dont believe me than ask the peopel who made the decks in todays metagame and trashing decks without a large knowledge of its capabilites is just as bad as not testing and i can vouch for the results of this deck its been tested and proven its worth.
7  Eternal Formats / Creative / [Deck] R/W sligh for the new type 1 on: November 11, 2004, 02:55:41 am
Hmm first off if your playing white why not abuse land tax scroll rack engine ? Also Orms chants could at least make your way into the sideboarded slot or even main deck. I mean orms chant stops combos and if it doesn't it always make them waste a counter spell for one mana. I also think instead of 4 savanna lions you should run 3 savanna lions and one hound of konda which is essentially the same but, a legendary 2/2. Perhaps I am wrong but, you are missing the balance somewheres in there I mean at least add the most powerful white card in the game to the deck.

Damn the soviet russia joke popped up our core group has such limited lines. Anyways, awesome article but, picking up chicks by playing magic and picking up chicks by being sexy are two different things Carl you should know that by now. Some of us just start up rock bands I'll get back to you on how well that works after a few gigs.Cause in soviet russia chicks pick up you. Anyways, I was quite surprised at Liz's superstar status by kissing a chick in public as well TMD'ers need to pull themselves away from the monitor and start hanging out with magic playing chicks or find an rpg girl that is interested. At least then they could get away with the whole not showering thing maybe.

As far as creativity is concerned lately i'd say type 1 and 2 formats are not being utalized to the best of their ability theres room for grow if anyone wants to find it. There are many combinations of cards and synergy out there in fact if anyone spends enough time testing and thinking a newer greater deck with raise from the vintage stockpile and have its shot at domination.  This super deck will then get over powered by the next and someone will see the metagame and create a new deck that shuts down the previous one. Magic will always go in cycles decks are reborn and old ideas come alive wizards does that pretty well as well as new kill conditions as well.
9  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Ways to introduce new blood into our game. on: November 05, 2004, 03:28:44 am
When I was teaching my sister to play magic I built her a really simple yet fun deck that used goblins. Its a good place to start with a theme I think and try to show them how cards can help each other. Things like Goblin King though not very good help get the mechanics down of the game. Also keeping to more vanilla creatures and having a few abilites introduced at a time seems to be helpful too.

My goblin starter deck though kinda of not very creative

20 mountains

4 goblin gilders
4 goblin strikers
4 raging goblins
4 goblin kings
2 goblin warcheifs
4 fire breaths
4 mons goblin raiders
4 spitting earths
4 shocks
4 crown of fury
2 goblin replicas

something like that can introduce enough mechanics but, not so many its too confusing.  I mean going over the stack and how it works is a little too advanced for most starters. Plus this is a rough skeleton of the one I used but, you can make it for quite cheap by raiding a commons box at a local store.
10  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / doodling on your cards on: October 11, 2004, 01:10:50 pm
If you wanna see some awesome doodling on cards check out Brassman's binder of all Brassman. It just shows the diveristy of doodles people put on cards. I have some hot information dealers though thats really a type 1 choice but, they are signed and altered by the great time traveler himself Jacob Orlove.

I think TO's really need to start milking that entertainment angle. Ray does a great job, and anyone who stayed the 2nd day at endicott knows how completely amazing it was, but most tournaments are just show up, play, award prizes. Making it more fun for the players can be even better than an increased prize structure.

i am fisherman

"So true.  One of the things I like about Waterbury are the fun elements.  The ability to meet other people, random eating contests(bacon bits, pancake syrup), Trivia, Lesbo action, Random Rafflees, Play Mats.  If huge tournaments are gonna be the norm...those that stay afloat will be those that provide what I think, and this thread reiterated, that ultimately type one players just want a good time, but yet might still go to a big tournament, if they think they can get it there."

Definately agree with you here. When I first went to a competitive magic tournament at Waterbury my first feeling was overwelming and then once I got to know people I loved the chill eniviornment and awesome events. I don't think I consider doing anything again magic related at huge tournament  cause I went 1-3 drop and sit around for CCW to be done.(Though I never looked at a bottle of syrup the same way again damn bottle almost killed me)

The side events make a tournament the ability to hang out with magic players and play some games of type 4 or casual magic like Brass Man and I did on day two of Endicott was really fun. I mean Endicott was awesome I loved helping out with this event constantly enertaining people and getting stuff rolling is essential. I think what would be awesome for tournaments is cheaper side events. Something like Homelands Draft or $5 tournaments for glory and a small prize or credit. Magic trivia though Jacob pulled out some hard stuff is really cool. This kind of stuff keeps the people who didn't top 8 or are trying to work up ranks through tournaments incentive to go and have fun.
12  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [issue] are tournament prizes out of control? on: October 01, 2004, 12:23:34 am
I feel that sometimes people on here forget how hard it is to  figure out how many are coming to a tournament two months in advance and to establish everything to detail with planning. Things can arise that TO's will never be prepared for like small attendence or too large attendence. When talking about the endicott tourny they had no clue if it was going to be 70 people or 300 people for the event. When attempted to establish a prize structure with that lack of figures if they under shot the prizes they could lose serious money or if they over shot they could lose serious money.
13  Eternal Formats / Creative / [Single-Card Discussion] Forgotten jank now tech? on: September 30, 2004, 09:05:16 pm
I think better forgotten tech would be putting a magus of the unseen in the side board of mono blue decks. It serves a much better purpose with a reasonable casting cost.At least Magus can swing a round with someones collussus or steal and blecher and go off on a player and get around lockdowns with the evil sphere. That being side red as color especially by itself is almost completely dead as far as things are concerned. It is slowly reaching the suicide black status not to say people should stop testing it but, right now those cards casting is not met by most decks mana base easily and there are better answers.

This is hugely off-topic to the point of thread hijacking. Proceed with caution.  -Bram
14  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Report] My Stainsy Endicott Report. (GAT) on: September 29, 2004, 11:34:44 pm
Kerz screw the debate/pictures over ripple shuffling you should show people how to play the slap game its so much better.

Some people are amazing at cheating so I understand the concern. But, after watching your opposer shuffle you should kinda of get a sense if they cheating. In most cases cutting a deck is good enough. Plus we cracked down on the proxies and marked cards and sleeves at the check station pretty hardcore so that eliminated a lot of cheating from being able to take place at the Endicott tourny.
15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [issue] are tournament prizes out of control? on: September 29, 2004, 10:59:20 am
I tend to think giving away a piece of power for everyone that top 8's should be more incentive for people to go to tournaments. I believe the turn out the endicott would be much less if they weren't guarantee power for top 8. In order to get people to travel far you have to give them a good incentive to travel. The timing of the tournament may have been not so hot but, if there is another one i am sure more people will show up due to the awesomeness of the this one. Endicott should now be seen a top place to have tournaments and attract more people due to the greatness of this one. I dont think many people would travel far for a tournament that gave away just a lotus for first and like a mana drain for second.

Sweet, so what is the cost to get into the poker tourny?

Sorry last time I checked the price wasn't clearified yet though the prize is based on attendence if enough people are playing a piece of power could go to the winnner. Man this tourny is giving away a lot of power. I jumped the gun I think earlier theres no guaranteed prize of power but, if things got according to how they were specified theres a good chance a piece will go up. I know the cost under 20 bucks though.

So do I have to be a certain age to play the poker tourny of something?

Is there going to be any sort of tourny friday night?(*magic tourny that is)

No age resrtiction. From my understanding the way the poker tournaments work is playing for a piece of power which entails no gambling legally because no money is being given away as prizes. As far as friday is concerned I dont think anything is going on in binghamton the two days of magic are on saturday and sunday. Except of course us playing casual magic. There is a lot of set up to be done on friday and doing stuff that day would just make things more hectic. If you really wanna do something friday I am sure you find people to draft the day before in the hotels. nothing is formally planned though.

Sounds very promising. I am sure people are eager to test out their 1.5 builds against each other and try to establish a metagame. I probably will do that.

I was just wondering if anyone would like to add some input for alternate formats day 1 of Mana Drain Championship for drop outs and such. If people ask for something since I am helping out at working it I can get a side tournament(s) going. So essentially what people ask for I'll attempt to run. I considered peasant magic  I know they'll be  type 4 (non tournament) going around with Josh's deck which is pretty tech. Any input would be awesome.
20  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / I moved to Russia on: September 20, 2004, 09:11:11 pm
Russia rules from what I hear. I took russian as a foreign language in high school it was really awesome. Over all its not too difficult to learn just 33 lettersin all. But, the culture is amazing as is the food. Good luck man in the sister city to binghamton new york.
21  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Where do you get your cards? on: September 19, 2004, 02:15:17 am
Samite Healer and Josh O our local friendly dealer in Binghamton will both have booths from what I hear. So you wanna get good stuff you people can come to Endicott pick up any card you need esentially for the tournament that day before they even play.
22  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Decklists for Highlander? on: September 19, 2004, 02:05:30 am
Covetous wheres the faerie conclave and mishra's factory no reason not to run the lands that can beat in highlander its generally a slower format. Also are you really running only one basic land seems kinda of risky with so much love of crucible of the worlds and wasteland. I might add that if you are running tinker it should be a given to run darksteel colossus nothing like tinkering for him to win a game.

24  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / [Primer/Report] - Syrup Chugging Contest on: September 14, 2004, 12:05:44 am
Thought I'd revive an old thread to set the record straight.  First of all with all the bingo magic players thoughts I warn people to not chug syrup if its the last thing on earth its the grosses thing I've ever attempted to chug and second of your coming to the binghamton tournament watch your back literally if byrice is around I learned that one the HARD way. The second day of this tourny is gonna own all others The set up is insane and there's going to be lots of events going on I'll possibly run peasant magic or cafe magic depending on things. Cafe magic is essentially a banned list of cards that people have complained about at our local community college of people playing.
25  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / [Format] Peasant Magic on: July 29, 2004, 12:18:48 am
I was just wondering how fast these decks actually kill someone? cause I i've made a pretty interesting deck out of mostly commons that would almost completely fit into this format.

10  forest
10  islands

3 Rush of knowledge
2 Krosan drovers

4 Metamorphosis
4 Energy taps

3 Dispersal shields
4 Titanic Bulvox
2 Krosan tuskers
4 Fierce empaths
3 Acclerrated mutations
2 Counterspell
3 Rush of knowledge
1 Echo truth
4 Chormatic spheres
2 Isochron Scepter

I am not sure how good it would nor what to use in the side board but, its a start. The object of this deck is to drop an egotist then you use either energy tap to add colorless mana to your pool ( for rushing for 8 cards) or metamorphosis which is like a sorcery verison of food chain for one green. ( to drop something big like a bulvox. The Bulvox was just my initial changed I used to use thorn elemental. Any input on this deck would be helpful. The sideboard is really hard for any tournament in this type It seems like red is a popular color with most of the research I seen. But, this deck is capable of dropping bug creatures rather quickly sometimes by turn .  I'll pick up the scepters soon to do some testing and post back.
26  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Buying Power 9 on Ebay? on: June 22, 2004, 01:29:04 am
Carl's definately got an extra pearl he won at Waterbury a few months ago. It is definately for sale as of last I heard. That was when we were playing bomberman and magic about a week ago. I'll have to ask him the price cause it seems he rarely comes around these parts of the mana drain these days.
27  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / [Deck] Black Tower on: June 12, 2004, 11:03:43 pm
To prevent creature damage there's a few different things you could run Ursa's armor was my inital though but, its casting cost is kinda high. Another card I was thinking you  could run is icy manipulators. And of course thunder staff is good against small creatures. One of the new rares in fifth down might good too though with the hyppies it might do more harm than good is the Silent Arbiter. Oh course none of these cards have anything on the power of Spincrusher. You simply can't compete with a metalic phallic symbol.
28  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Alternate tounament formats on: June 12, 2004, 06:46:15 pm

30  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / scornful egotist theme deck on: April 20, 2004, 09:48:27 pm
As for the mana situation there's only one way to really see what happens and thats play testing it I'll definately play with it a bit and see what works best and get back to you on that. The Ingots I am seriously considering and adding torrent seems good but, the problem I've found with running them is  playing them early game without energy tapping is difficult.
